And I took those great scores and taught for a few years.Then I had a baby, and I quit teaching to stay home with her. We moved to Texas, and I decided that I wouldn't take the TExES quite yet. After all, I was going to be a stay-at-home mom for a while. I put the test off and made the decision to take it later.And then I had another baby, and another baby."Take the TExES later on," I kept telling myself. "You can always do it down the road. After all, you don't even know if you'll ever go back to teaching."So I didn't. I focused on my kids and was quite happy living the June Cleaver life.As previously noted, I had taken the NTE in the very early days of the first Bush administration. And as I lived my happy at-home life, time passed. All the way through the Clinton administration and through the next Bush administration and through the first Obama term, I was blissful in my life at home, centered around my family. I piled my kids into the minivan and drove them to music lessons and to ball practice and to driver's ed. This was what I wanted to do. I could teach other people's kids later on; this was the only shot I had with my own.And time passed and babies grew and suddenly it was the spring of 2015 and Mr. Obama was well into his second term.I looked around and realized that my youngest baby was getting ready to enter high school."Oh, my," I said to myself. "That happened quickly. Maybe you should see about taking the TExES."I told myself that was a great idea. I sent everything to the state, and they told me what I needed to do to get my certificates transferred.It was official. Like it or not, I was going to have to take the PPR . . . *26 years* after I had taken the NTE and 22 years after I had quit teaching to stay home!Suddenly, I realized that I was very rusty.How on earth was I going to prepare?A quick online search led me to this book. A few readings of reviews led me to believe that it was the one must-have for adequately preparing for my test. My friends at Amazon made sure I had it as soon as possible, and I sat down to prepare.I took the diagnostic test and was unimpressed with, though not surprised by, my score. After all, it had been more than a quarter of a century, and I was rusty.I read the book and took the first practice test.It was better, but still pretty ugly.I read the book again and took the second practice test.I was relieved to see that my score was much improved.Over the next few weeks, I repeated the entire cycle of diagnostic test, read, practice test 1, read, practice test 2.My scores began to improve by leaps and bounds.Other than the resources at the ETS site, this was my only method of preparation.On the day of the test, I walked into a room filled with test-takers who hadn't even been born yet the last time I took a test. They looked at me in confusion, as if perhaps one of the other youngsters taking the test had brought their overprotective mother along to hold their hand. Shock registered on their faces as I, two days past my 48th birthday, took a seat among them.As I waited for the test to start, I was nervous and bothered by the fact that I was potentially wasting money on a test I wouldn't pass. I was old. I was rusty. I was relying on a book to teach me things that had taken me 4 years to learn when I was young and fresh. This was probably a really bad idea.The test began.I kept waiting for the questions to get hard.They never really did.Out of the 100 questions on the test, I was confident in my answer for 92 of them. After I finished, I went back through all 100 questions again and changed 4 of my answers. I summoned all my courage, pressed 'submit', and went out to my car.On the way home, I began to second-guess myself. It was too easy! Surely I must have misread some things!I spent a nervous Friday-to-Tuesday waiting for my scores. I had been told they would likely be posted between 10:00 and 5:00 on Tuesday.I started checking at 6:15 am.At around 8:00, my husband (who hadn't left for the day yet) said, "Stop doing that! They'll be there when they get there. You aren't going to make them show up any sooner!""I know," I said, as I refreshed the screen again.Finally, at 1:37, the screen switched from saying ' no scores are available' to saying 'click Submit to view your scores'.I held my breath.I pushed the button.The screen took foreeeeeeever to load.When it finally did, I scanned frantically for my score. I thought I had probably passed, but I wasn't positive. My heart was beating out of my chest and I had broken a sweat.All of a sudden, the number 293 leaped out at me.Not only had I passed, but I had even done well!48 years old . . . 26 years out of college . . . 22 years as a stay-at-home mom.Please remember that I had bombed the diagnostic test the first time, and the first practice test was pretty miserable, as well. The information found in the book was useful, and it was excellent preparation for me. Let me say again that it was the only method of preparation that I used.If that doesn't recommend it, I don't know what else will.I leave you, gentle reader, with this -- if you ever move to a new state and they require a different test than the one you took, take that test as soon as soon as you can . . . within the same presidential administration, if possible.In a couple of decades, your old brain will thank you for it.

First, a little bit of background about why I bought the book. I have been seeking certification through an alternative certification program. The particular program I used partners with a test preparation website called certifyteacher.com. After studying through that website for a couple of weeks, I'd gone through all the practice questions they had to offer. Practice tests no longer had value because I already knew all the answers. Because my PPR exam was still about 3 weeks away, I wanted another source of study topics and practice tests to keep me sharp.PROS:The information that is in the study guide portion of the book is quite good. The charts for Piaget's Stages of Cognitive Development, Erikson's Stages of Development, and Bloom's Taxonomy were very helpful. You can take the tests online or using the book and they offer an explanation of each answer.CONS:Although the information that is in it is good, it is in no way comprehensive. A lot of the topics I had studied prior to buying this book were completely absent. If I had only studied using this book, I would've been left clueless for a lot of questions on the exam.But the main problem I have with this book is that, in my opinion, the tests are full of really bad questions that are not indicative of the questions on the actual test. Not all of the questions are bad but many of them are confusing (easily misinterpreted to think it was asking something else), have multiple correct answers where none are clearly the "best" answer, or have an explanation that makes little logical sense. It was incredibly frustrating to take these practice tests. I almost didn't even take the second one (and I kind of wish I hadn't) but I was so annoyed by the test questions.I scored significantly higher on the actual PPR than I did on these practice tests. So on the plus side, if you do OK on these practice tests, you should be fine on the actual exam.Overall, I don't think it's downright awful but I don't think it's particularly good either. The information it contains is good but it doesn't cover everything you need to know and the tests could be a lot better than they are. I think it can be helpful for some but for me, it wasn't worth the $30 I paid for it.

Definitely was a helpful study material for the TExES PPR. There is a lot of material in here (if actually take the time to study it) that was EXTREMELY similar to the actual test. Buying it from Barnes and Noble is way more expensive... Amazon is definitely the place to go.

The material is good, but my complain is , as it states , book +online . When I entered the code . The rea website says this "The code you entered entitles you to purchase the online diagnostic and study materials at a reduced price of $1.99." I tried to purchase it-would not let me. I bought the book just for those two tests. I am disappointed.

I land somewhere between a 4 and 5 on this review. The first half of the book is incredible, a perfect narrative blend that builds with mystery and solidifies with punctual statements of wisdom such as: "The measure of a man is not what he does for wages but what he does for leisure"(p. 53). The beginning of the novel is poetically violent with a similar satirical undertone that has made Palahniuk famous. There is no central protagonist of the novel, but more of an Oz-like, omnipotent driving force that is Talbott Reynolds. Readers might expect the plot line of downtrodden and depressed leading characters such as Madison of Damned, Victor of Choke, and of course the narrator/Tyler situation in Fight Club. What readers will find with Adjustment Day, however, is that this particular novel is more about society as a whole and the general cultural confusion that exists in 2018. As the novel progressed, I felt like Palahniuk was perhaps spinning too many plates in the form of narrative storylines and I found myself wondering where things were going which is possibly a good thing because there are no predictable moments in the novel. I appreciated all of the references to contemporary and classic literature which made the novel feel a bit like meta-fiction at times, particularly when a literary criticism of Fight Club was mentioned. The book is a fairly easy read and I completed it in just a few days. I truly hated Beautiful You and I thought it was Palahniuk's worst literary effort, so Adjustment Day came as a welcoming relief.

I can see why some people won't like this book. Palahniuk is picking at an American scab. But in truth it's an important book. Without spoilers, Palahniuk has crafted a new American Experiment. He takes the American melting pot, agitates underlying insecurities, and reverses that melting pot with profound effect. As is typical with his novels, Palahniuk sticks to his "in your face" writing style moving through a wide variety of different characters and difficult, if not sometimes clumsy, transitions. I don't necessarily agree with how he portrayed the results of the reverse chemical process, but...hey, it's a novel. I'm game. Aside of these minor distractions, AD generates a unique perspective of how we face our current world. I feel better off having read it.

I think this is a great novel for our time, and it has some of the great social group hacks that made Fight Club a household name. Some people didn't read this all the way through, perhaps. Or they just didn't like it. I recommend RANT as the best next-book-in-the-loosely-grouped- FIGHT CLUB Trilogy (where this might also fit loosely). I will be generous, but fair, and give Chuck a B- for this one, for the great creative work that went into it. The storytelling is clearly his. Clearly worth a read for any of his fans.Let Spielberg buy the movie rights to this one. I'm right about this.

It is fair to say that this is the best Chuck in a decade. It is also safe to say it is too long and pretty messy. Still worth the read and enough ho or and insight to spur many conversations

This is Palahniuk, but a bit different. It has all the revolutionary feel of some of his other works exacted into a real revolution. The first half supports this and is powerful and page turning, but the post revolution lacks punch and the second half leaves one wanting for the horrors and extremity of some of his earlier works. Still a very good novel, but it never seems to meet the expectations it creates.

Adjustment day is a humorous transgressive romp through the fractured society of today's America. It is an obviously political book but is not merely a turgid vehicle for a socioeconomic philosophy (ex. Ayn Rand). It is an engrossing page turner that is roughly equal parts story and ideas. It is both a prayer and a warning. Eerily enough whether intended or not Palahniuk makes you wonder if the society we live in is so far gone that we are beyond parody. For as messy and as convoluted as things are in the book it often seems like a best case scenario given our current reality.

Adjustment Day is kind of like a mix of 1984 and The Purge. Profoundly funny and sickly hilarious, Chuck Palahniuk did not let me down. I really enjoyed it.

Early in this powerful book. Ron Powers writes that he doesn't want readers to "enjoy" it: mission accomplished. It's frustrating, depressing and mostly infuriating what a bad job the US has done with mental health care. On the other hand, while Powers is clearly biased to his viewpoint, he does a good job providing the historical context to explain why (wrong) decisions made sense at the time.Powers has a strongly personal connection to all this - both his sons suffered from various degrees of schizophrenia, which ultimately killed his youngest. As he describes, 'schizophrenia' is not multiple personalities as much a breakdown in how the brain processes information (I'm vastly simplifying) and worse, the brain is telling itself that it's fine - it must be terrifying to suffer. It makes sense that creative people would be predisposed to this, because their brain is working in ways most people's don't (again, vast simplification).The book does a strong job of switching between historical and current research and then back to Powers' own stories - it never goes through a "boring" stretch, and Powers is able to make the ins-and-outs of mental illness understandable to a layman's audience. As a reporter who went to Iraq several times, I'm obviously familiar with the causes/symptoms of PTSD, and so I had some context for Powers research - but any reader is going to have no problems understanding what's going on.Now....Powers is in full self-justification mode and he does not try to see all sides all the time. His oldest son injured a passenger in a near-fatal car accident, and Powers (unsurprisingly) defends his son a lot. The other parents wanted a sentence that was probably a little harsh for a non-drunk-driving accident, but I'd be angry too, I'm sure. So the excuses, etc. on Powers part were understandable, but a bit much. However, the story is important, because his son's first descent into mental illness probably began there.His other son sadly has ups and downs, and finally downs. He refuses to take his medicine and ultimately can't win the battle against his injured brain. And that's the tragedy - that Powers and his wife had to deal with this in the first place - he shouldn't have been at home, he should have been in a place where he could get full-time care. But those places don't exist anymore - whether it's budget cuts, or "personal rights," our society views mental health care as somebody else's problem. In our current 2017 society, we even have less interest in science or medical care, or anything that doesn't supposedly save us two nickel's in our precious taxes. Just like the anti-vaccination people are living in a world of magical thinking - that they know best in the face of science - so we've created a world where a brain disease makes the victim the bad guy, and that allows us to wash our hands of doing anything about it.Powers sort of glosses over many of the problems with institutionalized care. He's right that states shut down their state-run hospitals, and created the problem of homeless, insane people. But those hospitals were badly run and often abusive. So in a perfect world, they'd be a good solution, but they aren't a perfect solution. But they're certainly better than the head-in-the-sand approach we seem to be using now.Ultimately, the book made me angry in an impotent way. I don't see any changes on the horizon. I see the problems Powers describes getting worse not better. I see cops killing mentally ill people and continuing to cover it up - as Powers gives many examples of - or simply justifying it for likely fair reasons. But cops shouldn't be the front line to deal with deranged people - you don't call a cop when somebody has cancer.So it's a five star book for scope and effort, certainly, but it's not five stars for the reading experience, and I don't think Powers wanted it to be.

Ron Powers and his wife, Honoree Fleming, were intellectuals with two growing sons when their idyllic life in a Vermont college town began to fray. Both of them taught at Middlebury, she as a scientist and he as a writing teacher. Their sons, auburn-haired Dean and blond Kevin, three years younger, were bright, sensitive and well-liked.But not very far into the wide-reaching examination of the treatment of mental illness, we learn that Kevin has died after being diagnosed with schizophrenia, and that Dean is being treated for the same disease. The very moving story of these young menâ€™s problems runs in tandem with Powers discussion of societyâ€™s shameful treatment of mentally ill people throughout history. He recounts how when it appeared that some progress was being made in the United States after World War II, two individualsâ€”Thomas Szasz, a physician, and L. Ron Hubbard, a science fiction writer and founder of Scientologyâ€” played a powerful role in running reform off the tracks, as it is still today. Our mentally ill population was pushed out of the asylum into the streets and prisons.Out of respect for family privacy, Ron Powers first undertook a study not only of psychiatry as a social policy but of various treatments, many of them deadly, and how they came into use. An editor convinced him to relate the familyâ€™s experience with mental illness, and these passages give the book a kind of vibrancy and tenderness that pulled this reader through the forest of doctors and â€œexpertsâ€ (almost all male) and their conceptions of and treatment for illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Altzheimerâ€™s, and schizo-affective disorder.Scans have demonstrated that severe mental illness is a disease that distorts the brain, something that Freud and his followers had no way of knowing without access to magnetic scanning. Powers is particularly instructive about the vulnerability of the teen brain, which is pruning tissue and reorganizing as the youth becomes and adult. A compelling theory is that stress and drugs, such as marijuana, can have a detrimental effect on a developing mind genetically predisposed to mental illness.This is not an easy read, but itâ€™s a vital one that goes beyond a single family that was willing to share its suffering and point the way toward healing.

I came to this as the daughter of a mentally ill mother; her parents supported her (and me) as long as they could, and I managed her care for the last seven years of her life. Which were an utter hell: in and out of psychosis, in and out of mostly very grim institutions, no stability, little kindness. In one of the highest-income counties in one of the bluest states in the U.S.Ron Powers is angry. I learned some new history, but saw some overinterpretations and/or inaccuracies in the parts I knew better. I don't care. The emotional truth? Of his own family's story? It killed me. I cry for your kids, Ron, and for you and your wife; I cry for my mother still, and for her parents. Reading this book helped me cry some more about things I needed to acknowledge. Thank you for writing it.

This is a deeply personal account of the author's struggle with his two sons who were both afflicted by mental disease. It is hard to fathom the depth of despair that he and his wife have had to go through but in doing so gives the reader an insight into this world. Mr Powers intersperses the personal recount chapters with chapters on the history and facts around the treatment of mental disorders and patients over the millennia. These sections help bring to the reader context and appreciation of how society as a whole has treated patients. It is jarring. I for one have now a better understanding of the issues and why there are so many homeless people with mental disorder roaming the streets.Get this book. I think it is compulsory reading because all of us know some one with some form of mental disorder whether it is mild depression to full blown bipolar disease. This book will allow you to better appreciate the issues at hand.

About the Author

Mr. Duty was born and raised in Tupelo, MS, about 100 miles south of Memphis, TN. However, he wanted to master the â€œArt of Tradingâ€ and discovered that most of the books, videos and seminars he attended all had a few things that they all agreed on. So he took these common threads and started putting them into a journal. Soon after that friends and neighbors wanted to learn to trade and he began teaching them at a local college in Denver, CO. This is one of the first courses I ever read when learning to trade commodity futures. David Duty and I have been trading partners and friends ever since. I love trading futures, it's my heart and soul, and if you want to get a fantastic understanding of how to enter and be a part of this amazing and fascinating world, then this is absolutely the best course you can get your hands on, hands down!This is not just another "me too" book on trading, you could sift through hundreds, if not thousands of those, and never find much beyond black and white pages of long boring text. David's course is different, it's not just some book of text, it's a complete course, filled with charts, and pictures, and examples, and notes, and help along the way, and detailed explanations of difficult concepts.Trading doesn't have to be hard to understand, market's can only do three things, they can go up, they can go down, and they can go sideways. Along with other courses that David has authored, I purchased the Common Sense Commodities course when it was first released, and I was one of the first to purchase his Common Sense Options course. David doesn't just sell courses--he follows through with his time. He considers each course purchaser his student, and he personally cares about each and every one. In order to ensure that you have a complete understanding of the concepts involved in charting and trading commodities and options, David goes the second mile to give you access to all videos and notes that pertain to his courses, and he is always available to answer any questions that you may have. He is a born teacher and trainer, and I consider his courses basic to laying a solid foundation for your trading experience, be it in commodities or stocks.

Over the years I have purchased a number of different investment books, courses, etc. Many of them turned out to be "teasers" to get you to purchase expensive ongoing services and others (especially the "Guy in the Hat's") was an overly simplified explanation of how to visually follow patterns and "gamble" real money on them. Without a plan, you are not trading you are GAMBLING. David teaches you how to treat this as a business, and how to protect your money from market turns. He also doesn't try to tease you by talking about MAKING A FORTUNE! in the Market or LIVING THE DREAM! He explains how to make consistent gains vs. the occasional loss (and how to limit your losses)Over time, this is the true way to make money and this alone is worth the cost of the course!

Possibly the best, no-nonsense, easy to understand, and exciting commodities trading course I have ever purchased. (And I have purchased a bunch of them!!) David removes the mystique of trading the commodities markets and brings the student to a ground zero understanding thru common sense examples, charts, and explanations. He also includes videos which not only demonstrate each principle he is teaching, but provide live examples as well. He is there for you and will answer any question you might have. I read his other longer book years ago and found it overwhelming. This is the perfect length and easy to understand. It is a more concise summary of the larger book, I would recommend this for people over the larger book.I would look at the appendix for his top 10 favorite supplements. If you tried every supplement in the book you would be spending around $500 a month or so. So the top 10 is useful. The proboost though is ridiculously expensive. Instead I am using a mushroom based immune booster. And instead of the form of ribose he recommends I am using a form of bioenergy ribose sold on amazon(Dr's Best, or Swanson's uses this form). It is made in the US but more reasonably priced. Seems to work great just stay clear of the cheap Chinese garbage. If you are in a tight budget a good multiple, good B complex, d-ribose and a sleep supplement are likely the most important if you can't afford everything he recommends.

During now 9 years I have been fighting the problem with constant pain in my right hand, or more correctly the brain is telling me that I there this pain. Thatâ€™s how it has been since by an accident the arm was broken and thereby the nerves were stretched and then cut over on a sharp corner on the shoulder, the shoulder there being misconnected by a doctor a few years before. And then, besides of this, it here in Thailand took months to find a doctor for reconnecting the nerves, as in the actual hospital they told me that nerves cannot be reconnected! And as the result of this, and other mistakes in the original hospital, the brain newer relearned more than 1/3 of the length in the nerves down to the hand. And therefore, I have this constant brain believed pain in the right hand.And as I wasnâ€™t born in either England or USA, and without my mother language being English, then during the years where I have been searching after books about pain, didnâ€™t find help for solving my problem, until first some weeks ago when I discovered that instead of searching after books titled pain, I should go searching after books titled fibromyalgia; that is about incomprehensible pains/not clearly detectable reasons.And now a week ago I, as the first book concerning fibromyalgia, then received this one, and must say that I by this book I here got much new knowledge, long missed information, and it looks like Iâ€™m now on the right trail. But now I then will have to see if I in the pharmacies can get what is mentioned in the book, as for example the D-ribose 5-gram. Because itâ€™s the problem that here in Thailand we are not allowed in buying even simple vitamin pills from other countries (once Amazon told me this), as for example vitamin K2, even though it doesnâ€™t exist out here, and the doctors donâ€™t know about this one, and the those of the other vitamins and minerals which we also are missing.Again, I am very impressed by the much good content in the book, and have ordered one more of his book. And besides, I also like the way in which he tells that first he searches after help in solving problems by searching after help from nature, as herbs, before going after drugs. Besides he also writes that too often syndromes are treated by surgery. Just as spoken out of my throat.

I really enjoyed this book and even though I am a nurse, I think it's easy for non-medical people to read. He did say this was more of an overview of the topics and said his initial book is more detailed. I will read that and revise my review if needed. I'm unlucky enough to have fibromyalgia, CFS, Essential Tremors, asthma, had brain surgery at 19 for Arnold-Chiari malformation, a small temporal meningitis and most recently Mast Cell Activation Syndrome/Disorder. Because of the MCAS I have allergic reactions to MANY foods/meds/supplements so a more in-depth analysis of the supplements would really help. Gentle hugs to all!

I can honestly say that the heavy fatigue and brain fog I've been experiencing is now more under control. (not healed but helped) Fatigue and brain fog have been my worse enemies so this is no light thing. I started using the D-Ribose by Shine and the CoQ10 first. I am not taking the b vitamins regularly as yet. I also found an electrolyte drink that is helping immensely...the NUNN ENERGY tablets that you add to your water bottle. (I also add Xylitol to make it taste even better) The other day gave a bottle of this to my husband and he asked later, "What was that in the bottle you gave me!!!!" He said it helped him get through working outside on a hot day. The book has ideas of things you can do to help plus lots of informational tidbits on things that cause fatigue and what have you.I recommend this book.

My 8 year old needed to do a project for school and we chose Cleopatea. I thought it was nice to actually own the nonfiction book do we got this one. She enjoyed it immensely. Didnâ€™t even notice the nude pictures do that wasnâ€™t an issue for us.

This book was informative and well written. I have used it in ESL education. The students learn the tragic story of Cleopatra and how her life intertwined with two of the most powerful leaders of Rome. It's a great starting point for discussions about the ancient world.

Great book for those that are interested in learning more about Cleopatra. Purchased for a gift for my daughter for Christmas and she has read it many times and loves sharing her new knowledge with us. Very pleased.

Our 7 year old is SUPER into ancient Egypt history and this is a good one on Cleopatra. Very age appropriate (sometimes hard to find regarding ancient Egypt history!) Fun to learn together!

I have purchased all the National Geographic readers for my classroom library. My students love these informational texts. Unfortunately, this text will not be going into my classroom library as it is, because there are two pictures where a women's breast is exposed and I can just imagine student's reactions to this. I will however, drawn on these women's tops so that this book is appropriate for my class.

My daughter loved this book. She is in an Egyptian phase right now and reading all she can. This was written well for her age, 8, and gave great facts which she retains!!

It was fine for what we needed; a school project. That's all I really need to say. Didn't really want to post, but couldn't get out of it.
