Arrived damaged, edges ripped
I am always thrilled to get a copy of a book that isn't the usual advanced reading copy since many times the photos are missing and things like the introduction, etc. are also missing. So, when I got this book in the mail I was surprised to have gotten a copy that is exactly like what a buyer would get. It is a pictorial hardcover book with no dust jacket, slightly square shaped, and it is heavy due to all the pages.This is a lovely book. You can use it as a simple diary as there is a separate page for each day of the year starting with January 1. On the left side of the page is the text, that tells something about gardening and space for any notes you have. It is not a large space however, but good for jotting down ideas, birthdays, etc. On the other page is a lovely full color photo of a garden at that time of year. While I haven't seen and read every page yet (this isn't the kind of book to sit down and read straight through), I have been impressed with what I have seen. One page described the different types of snow and its effects on plants. Another page talked about what to do with ponds in the winter if they completely freeze up. Who knew that you couldn't just leave it frozen! Many of the pages that I looked at had the Latin names for plants, so you can check to see if they can tolerate your climate and to help you know exactly which plants to buy to get the same effect.My husband always teases me about my Picasso garden. While I can no longer take care of my flower garden, I never like the looks of plants all planted in a row, I like them in bunches with the flowers coordinating. When he saw how I was planting he couldn't believe it but was impressed as the plants started growing and in a very small way looked like the gardens in this book. Very natural gardens that still look good during the months when it seems not much is going on with the garden due to snow and ice. It is easy to plant plants all in rows, it is something else to plant them in such a way as to look natural and beautiful.For a gardener, this is a great book and considering all the color pictures in it, you are getting your money's worth. Even though set up as a yearlong book of discovery, you can pick it up at any time of year and read it and use it year after year. This book would also make a great gift to your favorite gardener.
This is a reflective daily journal that begins with January 1 rather than a comprehensive resource on gardening. It didn’t quite connect for me that the format would be a daily journal with room to write a thought for the day about gardening, birthdays or anything you want. For example, March 31 proclaims that “Now is the time to plant roses†and gives ideas about using a vertical space. It has a few lines for birthdays/notes and a beautiful rose garden picture. Today is April 14, and I read about pot gardens and the book suggests how to arrange them. It has a lovely photo of a moss covered work table with wicker baskets with flowers and wreaths.It’s a beautifully photographed journal that’s heavy and best for sitting and writing at a desk. It’s a journal to read a few minutes each day, perhaps while having coffee or tea, and make a few notes and perhaps find some inspiration to beautify your surroundings or just admire the beauty in the photo. It’s not a book to sit down and read all at once and not really a reference book, but it has lovely ideas to go back to later and perhaps one day try to replicate or incorporate somehow into my own yard. It makes me think of my husband who was a horticulturist, lover of nature and creator of beautiful garden settings. This journal would be perfect for someone like him. I’ve been wanting to make a few changes to add my own touch to my surroundings and this journal is full of lovely ideas.
I was so disappointed in this book! My husband also had a look and said, "I wouldn't buy it." It weighs a TON, so it would not be a good gift for an elderly person; it's not comfortable to grip or have in your lap. I wasn't expecting it to be in calendar form, but each left page has four lines for Notes/Birthdays. However, the lines are only 2.5 inches long with too much spacing in between, so you can't write anything of substance even if you want to. The page also has a single paragraph about something pretty random, and there is no order, so good luck if you want to find it another time. For instance, I know there's something about growing tomatoes, but where is it? Possibly lodged between a page on roses and a page on birdbaths. There's a list in the back in lieu of an index, but it's by date order (not even alphabetical), so you would need to read the whole list entry by entry to find something specific.The entries also aren't intended to help you recreate things in your own gardem. For instance, July 11 shows a water feature. The entry is not about how to create one. It just tells you to keep them covered or add an escape ramp so animals don't get trapped and drown. THAT'S THE ENTRY.This was a German book originally, so the garden style is European (think lots of trimmed hedges), and all measurements are metric. I love gardening and reading about gardening, but I can't recommend this book for kindred gardeners.
