The guidelines set down by St Benedict seem other worldly at first read. Talk of corporal punishment and sleeping ready for work and prayer make it easy to discard the book as history long gone, never to be relevant today. But there are more points of guidance for today then one may want to see. How much better to be disciplined to daily prayer, to speak with respect to elders and with kindness to those needing our care, and to know one's place in God's order than to live from circumstance to circumstance like being tossed about by the sea? Many thousands have been shaped by this rule and have lived successfully both behind monastery walls and outside them teaching and nursing and doing social work. Hospitality takes on new meaning having read this short book then simply matching napkins to table mats for a dinner party. Worth a read for history's sake and a second or third for lessons on living gently and wisely for today.

If you are looking for a simple version of the rule and do not want someone's opinion of what Benedict is saying then I recomend you get The Rule of St Benedict, editor PlanetMonk Books, translator Boniface Verheyen. I got this book first and it was not what I was wanting. The one by PlanetMonk Books is much better. It is broken up by days and set up so you can skip to the day you are wanting. And it is just Benedict's writing. I am much happier with it.

This is the little booklet that St Benedict wrote around AD 528, according to the introduction. While it is usually thought of and applied to monastic life, St Benedict makes clear in the prologue that his text is meant for anyone who wishes to "return to [God]." Thus this is not some kind of antiquated text meant only for religious. Not only may we learn from St Benedict how to more deeply love, obey, and give ourselves to God, but we get a very good idea of what early monastic life was like. Finally, the text can be read in one or two sittings. It's an easy read and one that if done prayfully and with the proper dispositions, can help you to fall more deeply in love with Our Lord.

Father Benedict's Holy Rule. Live life by it.

Let me just say that there are many editions of this classic book that are much more affordable, but if you are looking for a book that will last a lifetime, a book that feels wonderful in your hands, this is the edition you want! The Rule is a pocket-sized book, nicely printed on good paper, bound in genuine leather, with a ribbon marker. The leather is thick and soft, hand-bound over sturdy boards, and it even smells wonderful. Perhaps the perfect edition of The Rule of St. Benedict. Highly recommended.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in understanding in depth, the life of a religious and what their daily life entails, but also, a chance to to glimpse how humanity should strive to live with one another as it is written for. US in the holy gospels. I gave it five stars because I haven't found another rule except the bible that can compare, another good read would be john michael Talbot book ( the lessons of st. Francis). Living a monks life in today's real world. I think was very well written.

A must read

This is an excellent resorce of various texts on the Blessed Virgin Mary throughout history by His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, one of the truly brilliant and eloquent teologians in the Catholic Church today. A must have on anyone's bookshelf who is a true student of Marianology.

I love Brendan Kelso's versions of Shakespeare and Dickens. They are perfect for kids 8-13. Gets them ready for high school when they read the real stuff. I've directed several of Brendan's books for small casts of kids in theatre workshops. Two Gentleman is funny and well-edited.

Your kids will love Kelso's Two Gentleman of Verona!

A wonderful book in an ingenious series!I am not currently teaching but taught 4th grade and my students would have absolutely loved this series!I would recommend for upper elementary through high school as Kelso translates ancient puns and phrases into captivating and humorous language students can understand.I laughed my way through the book and thoroughly enjoyed this particular story. I was not familiar with the original as I was with more well known works like Hamlet and Macbeth, but feel I could provide a summary better now than I could have from reading Shakespear's version!It's an excellent way to incorporate drama, the classics, and fun reading info the classroom! Highly recommend.

I received a free review copy of this book.This is a decent introduction to the weirdness of Shakespeare for a young audience! If you can follow who's in disguise and why, and who's lying about what to who, you'll have a good grounding in what to expect from more adult literature! The lines make it pretty obvious - ad libbing and breaking the fourth wall are encouraged. I will admit, as the players point out in this version, that Julia gets stuck with a cheating loser in the original. Luckily, the kids won't let their play end that way!I liked the different versions included for different group sizes, although I was surprised that the other romantic rival doesn't appear if there aren't enough people! Evidently, the dog is more important than Thurio's plot.

I just can't say enough awesome things about Kelso's Two Gentlemen of Verona. For me, the best part is the accessibility of the text! Kelso get's right to the meat of the story and brings the poetry of Shakespeare to kids (and several laughs for the grown-ups). As a theatre director, I've worked with high school students as they stumble through Shakespeare's actual text and I've worked with middle school students with Kelso's Playing with Plays Shakespeare and had more success with the later. I had kids lining up to participate in Kelso's Shakespeare plays instead of picking their own monologue or duet scene to perform in. Two Gentlemen of Verona continues to deliver the same wit, easy text interrogation, and versatility of Brendan P. Kelso's other Playing with Plays Shakespeare scripts. I also love the Sneak Peak of three other scripts at the end! If you're looking for new ways to introduce Shakespeare, or classic literature to your students or kids I highly recommend Brendan P. Kelso's Playing with Plays seriers!

What I have really come to love about this series of books is how fun it can be for younger kids as well. I have three, the youngest being six. She is starting to read pretty well and books like these allow her to learn a classic story in a way that she can handle and actually enjoy. Even better the kids are able to read to each other and the older ones have fun with the added nuances from the author. The little ones will love it even more. That is part of the beauty. You don't really need a stage. All the world is a stage! The length of the books are just long enough to capture the story while keeping the kids attention, which these days is not easy task. Well done overall. Definite buy.

Once again, Brendan Kelso brings Shakespeare to life in the most captivating and entertaining ways! Last year I taught Hamlet, Macbeth, and Midsummer to our 1st-5th grade homeschool co-op students, and they loved it! This year I'm tracing Tempest, Julius Caesar, and Romeo and Juliet. I'm going to use Two Gentlemen of Verona with our middle schoolers to study alongside Romeo and Juliet so they can contrast the two plays! The banter of Two Gents is hilarious to read even as an adult, and makes me fall in love with Shakespeare all over again - and you will too!

I am a huge fan of the entire Playing with Plays Series, and this is one of the funniest in the collection. At first, I had some reservations due as I am not a fan of Shakespeare's. Never fear, Kelso handles this in a clever way which sparked an excellent discussion with my children regarding the respect for women. These books are fun and educational. Don't hesitate to buy them for your children 8 and older!

Montaigne's Essays are one of the more enjoyable massive tomes of renaissance writing available, and if reading in English, one has two major modern choices of translation, Screech and Frame.To start with Translation: Both major translations are excellent in their own way, but some differences are of note. When a translation is done, usually the translator will translate the major language of the text, French in this case, and leave quotes by the author from other languages, mostly Latin in this case, untranslated. The translator will provide a note with the translation of the quote, and preferably the source of the quote.This is where Screech and Frame differ considerably. Screech does what should be done, and Frame just translates everything into English with no significant notations other than the person quoted. This means, however, that one may prefer one translation over the other based on this alone. For example, one that wishes to take a more scholarly look will likely use Screech (or the original), and one that simply wants to read for pleasure may have no problem using the translation by Frame. Also, Screech is British and Frame is American, so one may have other preferences for style.As for the Physical Copy:The physical copies of Frame's translation (Stanford and Everyman's) are vastly superior to the Penguin Classics Screech version. The Penguin paperback is thick, but in keeping with the generally small form factor, the print is terribly small, and the paper is of a horrible quality, which is the reason I also purchased the Kindle version.As for the Kindle version:The Penguin Classics Kindle file is much more pleasant to read and deal with than the paperback alternative. However, there are many errors in the Kindle version that are not present in the paperback version. It appears some items get corrected occasionally, but still, it is not nice to charge so much for the Kindle version, and not have it completely proofread and ready for primetime.This actually lead me to have a conversation with a Penguin representative about the quality of the Kindle version, and in that conversation, I learned something I had not realized before. Penguin does not produce the Kindle version. Amazon does. So, all of the quality issues I have noticed in the past about Kindle versions essentially are the fault of Amazon rather than the publisher listed. I suppose the publisher only sells Amazon license to produce the Kindle file and sets price limitations, and Amazon does the rest. This needs to change, because there needs to be more quality control.***EDIT 02/01/2016: SEE COMMENT BELOW BY RAFA. APPARENTLY, IT IS THE PUBLISHER'S FAULT, NOT AMAZON'S.***However, because of the limitations of the Penguin paperback, I would still recommend the Kindle version if one is to read Screech.Five stars for Montaigne's Complete Essays, regardless of which version one chooses to read.

I have three translations of Montaigne - Cotton, Frame (this one) and Screech (no kidding). The Cotton translation was done in the late 18th century and is some what difficult to read. Frame was done in the 1950's and is very readable. Screech is more recent and is also quite readable. Frame simply translates Montaigne's frequent Latin quotes whereas Screech presents the Latin along with the translation. While this may be more scholarly, it is distracting if you don't read Latin.The Frame volume includes other works by Montaigne such as his travel journals. Thus, it is more complete than either Cotton or Screech. This volume is over 1300 pages and is not very portable. Still I recommend it as being more complete and a little more readable.

I am attaching photographs of THIS version (Screech) so that you can see what you are diving into. My copy has been noted as I have been teaching him.MONTAIGNEThe writer to publish the first personal essay, and most essays are short and intriguing in that they use psychology to communicate his messages. This is done through poetry, historical references, linguistics, theology, imaginary scenarios and intriguing language. every essay is a paradox. You do not need to know that, hence the enjoyable aspect. Montaigne has influenced writers/figures like Eliot, Freud, Shakespeare, Descartes and more.SCREECH’S INTROIt's important only if you are interested (or are required) in understanding the translation process. Screech dives into the history that influenced Montaigne's essays. His introduction tells you a bit about Montaigne, but it is not that long and can be skipped. He also explains how he went about translating his version of this collection.OMISSIONS OF WORKS IN SCREECH’S BOOKThere's stuff missing in a bunch of the collections because he has written so much. If you are looking for something rare or specific, you should look which book it is before purchasing. All of them are available on Amazon..HELP FOR STUDENTSSome college professors are adamant that only this book be read. You might need to write papers with citations. This book is very different than the other books. Screech's is better for students and scholars. It includes citations and the very short Latin and French quotes that he uses, though all of it is translated into English for you. The Latin and French line/quotes/references are usually very short. The translations are right next to quotes in parenthesis. If you purchase a different collection, you will have a very difficult time with writing papers because of the varying translations.Overall, this is a phenomenal read produced by a prolific and prominent man. Screech does a great job. This is the best book of the collections that I have purchased, though it is the most difficult to understand. Again, this collection is more for scholars and academics. Montaigne is studied to this day, nearly as much as Shakespeare because of the sheer difficulty of the paradoxes presented, but, they are enlightening and enjoyable. In terms of literature, Montaigne is one of the "trickiest" reads (he calls himself tricky-- it is a bit of his trademark).

The topics he covers range from the wisdom of the ancient philosophers to everyday nuisances present in the life of the late 16th century. The overriding theme throughout is his focus on himself, the only subject he is sure that he knows better than anyone else. This book is valuable because he writes about subjects that are still relevant to today, over 400 years later, and will continue to be relevant throughout man's history to come. I have never wanted to slap a person upside the head so bad as when I was reading this story. Both the H and h were morons. Their thoughts throughout the book made me want to watch paint dry instead of reading the book. He divorced his wife a year ago because she was so depressed about not being able to conceive that he decided leaving her was the best thing to do so she could stop trying to get pregnant. This guy has a doctorate??? He was so stupid to think that divorcing her would help her. He broke her freaking heart. Then of course the 'one last time's scenario produced a miracle baby. She wrote him a year ago but he didn't get it since he was in the wilds of Africa. Once he got it, he hurried home and there starts the tale of the conflicting thoughts. We were inside their head so much I felt like I was their frontal lobe and I really wanted to lobotomize myself!!! Just too much back and forth and they both were just idiots. I almost dnf'd it but I soldiered on and finished it. The epilogue was cute but I don't believe for a minute that they will live happily ever after. Unless they got a lobotomy of course.

About the Author

Frank McCourt (1930–2009) was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Irish immigrant parents, grew up in Limerick, Ireland, and returned to America in 1949. For thirty years he taught in New York City high schools. His first book, Angela's Ashes, won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award and the L.A. Times Book Award. In 2006, he won the prestigious Ellis Island Family Heritage Award for Exemplary Service in the Field of the Arts and the United Federation of Teachers John Dewey Award for Excellence in Education.

I had purchased Frank McCourt's book Angela's Ashes and really enjoyed the book. He was such a good writer and lived an interesting and sad life. After reading Angela's Ashes I wanted to read more of his work about his life so I purchased Tis, which is a book about his life. This is another extraordinary book by Frank McCourt. He writes so honestly and his love, sadness and triumph comes through. I recommend Tis and other Frank McCourt books. I've never seen the movie based on his books, and they are very vivid and some times heartbreaking and honest.

An excellent reminder of the hardships encountered by our parents and grandparents who came to America in search of a better life.

After the grueling Angela's Ashes the McCourt (and most imigrant Irish) saga continues. So many of these folks just never found the right warm and fuzzy place to settle into that the movies always told us about did they? Maybe this ought to be required reading for those of us who have forgotten how difficult it was and still is to be an immigrant. I'm grateful that my ancestors were so poor that they quickly moved on towards the midwest to make a life, away from the temptation to hop another ship back to the old country. Unfortunately the lessons of those terribly difficult assimilation years haven't stuck with very many of us so as to imbue us with more compassion for today's newcomers. I'm glad the McCourts stuck it out long enough to provide a good lesson.

I got this CD set to listen to at work. I had already listened to "Angela's Ashes". Now, I am listening to "Teacher Man". Frank McCourt is hands down my favorite writer. He is such an inspiration. He is one person I really would like to have met. If you wanted to just reach back in time, find little Frank and give him a hug during "Angela's Ashes", you might not feel exactly the same about adult Frank. He is no longer directly in the grip of his mother's poverty once in America. His mentality is still in the slums of Limerick, though not because he really wants it to be. It really is just all he knows and what was engrained in him. Throughout this book, you see his charm and intelligence shining through. But, his self doubt seems to always have a hold of him, dragging him back down. His ignorance of so many things most Americans take for granted and his severe humbleness make him endearing all the same. I would recommend "Tis" to anyone. If you had a tough time while growing up, you will be able to relate. I suppose, if you had a perfect childhood, you can get a glimpse of how the rest of us felt. :)

This was such a wonderful honest book. I felt like I was listening to an old man I just met at a coffee shop. He tells you the story of his life in such a wonderful way. I cannot imagine the things that he grew up with. I find his honest revelry regarding his own struggles with alcohol heartbreaking. He did what he knew. He spoke of alcohol being the curse of the Irish, that his father ruined his childhood because of drinking and yet he himself couldn't control it. One thing that stuck out was his struggles with religion. It saddened me when he said that he didnt know how to have a conversation, direct prayer with The Lord. Through his struggle he became something, and I think that's what everyone needs to know!

Poignant, intense, exciting, gut wrenching yet heart warming are the scenes, actions and memories described in this continuation of an indepth look at the the trials, tribulations and successes of Frank Mc Court and his family. As you read it, you "are there" in New York, in Ireland, -at Mam's almost reunion with Frank's father, - in the army with Frank in Europe, - in church, - in the boarding house which provided meager temporary shelter, - in the countless dull mind-numbing jobs he had before becoming a teacher, - in the classroom trying to inspire lethargic students. With wit, and a lot of mischievious charm, author Mc Court escorts us through his romantic liasons, marriage and birth of his daughter, - his brothers arrival and existence in New York,- his own "coming of age in America" as he matures, - and the death of his beloved mother, Angela, (Mam).'Tis a grand saga. 'Tis a grand book. -- 'Tis. Now let's see the movie. John Wayne, Barry Fitzgerald, Victor Mc Glagen (The Quiet Man") would have been ideal, but they are gone. That leaves Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting) or Robin Williams ( Dead Poets Society). How about it Mr Mc Court.? Write the screenplay for the movie based on your memoir triology, or at least give us another outstanding book!!!

This is a funny, but somber, well written account of an Irish immigrant (the author) and his family "troubles". He also wrote "Angela's Ashes" and has won many awards. It is a window into a certain time in the history of immigrants from one country and the changes and obstacles they faced, and the country they left behind but stayed in torch with.

I really enjoyed "Angela's Ashes," and like this book even more. You basically could combine the two into one big book, as one is just a continuation of the other. Both are written in McCourt's unique style and both are a pleasure to read. I think "Tis" gets the extra star from me because, whereas "Angela's Ashes" really kept you feeling bad for the boy throughout, "Tis" is a story of hope and promise. Much happens to Frankie McCourt once he gets to the U.S. and the life he leads here keep you both interested and wondering just how he would be able to turn his fortunes for the better.This, as was "Angela's Ashes," is a very honest book. In no way does McCourt attempt to cover up his flaws or missteps. In no way does he try to paint himself a hero. You get the real deal here, and many times I found myself closely relating to what he was thinking at any given moment.I highly recommend this book.
