every year, I try and treat myself to an overseas trip to a country that is hot and humid so I can have a few days free (relatively) from the pain of my arthritis. The Spartacus guides help me plan my trips, working out where I want to go and where I want to stay. I am too old and have spent too much time in pain to want to go ot stay anywhere that I dont feel welcome. So far Thailand is my favourite vacation spot and I prefer to either go to the islands or to Pattaya than to stay in Bangkok. Unfortunately, Bangkok is becoming too big, too touristy, too commerical and too dangerous to be as much fun or as exciting as it once was. The islanmds are the most unspoilt and Pattaya (while becoming commercial) still retains a lot of charm in off season, when it is bloody cold at home

You can check my reviews of prior versions. Spartacus remains the standard for global travel. Sure, bars close or are renamed often. However, this single guide gives you an excellent starting point of where to go, what to see in nearly every city on the planet. If you are gay and travel outside of the US, you need to buy this book. As I've said in the past....the price is under 2 drinks in any major city in the US. So I'm basically done with my review. I will say though, there are other guides which are better if you never intend to leave the US border (damron). Have fun!

It's good only to have a general view of the areas.I checked some places I'm familiar and it has some gaps. I was expecting a description, but many places are just the name and address. One of the best and famous clubs I know has nothing special on this book and no description about the crowd!So I think it's just good for a first look. Then you go online and look more about it.

I find the individual country commentaries especially helpful, as they give good insight regarding acceptance of gays in each country. I've been purchasing this book for years, and the listings for bars, hotels, etc seem to get more accurate every year.I would not advise to use this guide solely for planning a luxury vacation.

It took me 2 1/2 hours to pioneer through this riveting read. I read the full-length book a few years ago and this shortened version for young students was a great refresher and I learned much more than I did the first time. In reading this book you will be glad you weren't on this perilous journey with former President Theodore Roosevelt and his entourage. Every kind of danger imaginable is encountered on this seven week journey down The River of Doubt not knowing how long the river was or now navigable it was. In addition to having a traitor in their midst dangers galore lurk in the jungle when survival became all but impossible.As I mentioned this book was written for students but I, as an adult, was mesmerized by it as well. I would say that an individual who is reading at a good 5th grade level would be able to enjoy the book. As a parent you may want to take turns reading portions with you child one chapter at a time. I can't imagine they being uninterested in this book. I am going to purchase an additional five copies to give away as gifts as the situation arises. Do yourself a favor and buy the book. Your child will thank you for it and he may even develop an interest in reading.

My first grader absolutely loved this book. He was so engrossed he read it every spare moment he had. The bits I read with him were exciting and well written. Highly recommend!!!!

Death on the River of Doubt follows the journey of Cândido Rondon and Theodore Roosevelt as they travel along the previously uncharted River of Doubt, discussing the trials and tribulations they face along the way, from hostile natives to disease and betrayal. The book moved through the expedition with chapters about important day(s), using the writings of the participants and the newspapers of the time to describe what happened in a way that is understandable to kids, while also factually correct and similar to how more adult nonfiction books are written. This provided a pleasant surprise as usually juvenile nonfiction is generally sparse on sources and simplifies too much, but I did not feel this way at all throughout the book. Seiple balances the research portion and the kids’s portion very well, making it not seem like a researched topic, but more of a story (though without the awful presumptions of creative nonfiction). She provided a good amount of context, so people could go into this book not knowing too much about Roosevelt, Rondon, or the Amazon. The only thing I wanted more of was what they specifically discovered or how it has been helpful, but I think the interest in brevity is important here than comprehensiveness, as it will make kids want to find more. Teddy Roosevelt is such a monumental figure in US history, and this book can help kids learn about him even more. Former President Teddy Roosevelt was invited down to Brazil to give a series of lectures. While down there, he was invited to join an expedition to explore and map what was believed to be a new branch of the Amazon, the River of Doubt. Never one to say no to a good adventure, Teddy and his son Kermit joined the expedition led by renowned Brazilian explorer Cândido Mariano da Silva Rondon. Instead of finding a nice easy river, though, the expedition encountered numerous difficulties and all of them were in danger of not making it out of the deep jungles of Brazil alive.This expedition is referenced a few times in THE LOST CITY OF Z so my interest in it was first piqued when I read that book. It did not disappoint as an exciting true life exploration/adventure/survival story. It's well-written and outlines a crazy adventure! It is just plain miraculous Teddy Roosevelt lived as long as he did. He must have been part cat or something with all his near death experiences. (The book does give some background on his life but basically just 2 chapters before jumping into the Rondon/Roosevelt expedition.) Hand this to teens or adults who like exciting and adventurous stories or survival stories, they should eat it up and go away hunting for more info on Amazon exploration or Teddy Roosevelt.Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content. Not everyone makes it out alive and one death is a murder by shotgun that's somewhat described. Other injuries or discomforts are also a bit described and hunting for food and science is mentioned.

Great take on Theodore Roosevelt and his adventures after he left the Presidency. As an adult I picked this book up at the library for myself because it looked interesting. It was quite riveting. The book flowed well, and the pictures interspersed throughout the text were informative and relevant. The story truly brings home what it was like for adventurers during this time period and how close Theodore Roosevelt actually came to death.The book gives some background on Roosevelt as he was growing up until he gets to the White House. He then went to South America for a visit but was offered the chance of an adventure, that of mapping a river that led into the Amazon that had not been drawn on any maps previously. The hardships are clearly stated but not in a graphic way that would be disturbing to an older child. I do agree with the 7th grade and up age level. Certainly the reading level is lower than that but the content might be upsetting for sensitive children.This is an informative book, and reading it made me want to pick up other books by Samantha Seiple. This is well worth your time for adults and older children.

I also appreciated the author showing the greed and corruption of Jamie Dimon, Larry Summers, and Goldman Sachs.Here are some statements by the author that I found interesting:Page 91 -- The Fed, Fisher argued, was giving in to a "siren call" to "indulge rather than discipline risky financial behavior."Page 252 -- But remember, at the end of the fairy tale, the wolf shows up. The Federal Reserve's radical monetary policy -- imposed by academics with no experience in the business world -- has proved a disaster on an unprecedented scale. Fed Up is as much a page-turner as any Tom Clancy or Steven King novel, with one difference. This story isn't fiction. It's all too real and affects every one of us. Highly recommended.

It was an interesting book in terms of discussing the dynamics of the fed and in general getting deeper into the story than can easily be found in the general media. It fell a little short of my expectations in terms of suggesting policy alternatives and why they might have led to a superior outcome once the crisis hit ; same with the discussion of derivatives - the author gives a reasonable account of what happened, but does not break it down, compare it to previous crises, etc. in a way that might suggest how something similar might be detected and/or headed off in the future.Well written and I was not unhappy I purchased it, just came away feeling more like I had read a dramatic novel when I was expecting more policy analysis and data-supported recommendations. Probably a 3.5, but couldn't quite get myself to a 4.

With their consistent tunnel vision and inability to appreciate economic facts right before their eyes, they've done great economic harm to the taxpayers of this country. Nazario does a superb job of showing the emotional devastation suffered by both the parents who leave and the abandoned children. Her thoroughly researched story also creates a terrifying picture of how horrific and perilous the journey is. Only people who feel life has no other options for them put themselves in so much danger. Assaults, robberies, starvation, dehydration and deadly accidents are the norm. It takes Enrique seven tries, 122 days and two very close calls with death to finally reach his mother. Both Enrique and Lourdes have unrealistic expectations. After 13 years apart, they are strangers to each other. Enrique is angry. Lourdes is hurt that Enrique doesn't understand it was her loving and heartbreaking sacrifice that kept him alive and in school. Sonia Nazario does not romanticize or white-wash Enrique's story. He is not a hero. Enrique is a sad, lonely young man determined to reunite his family and create a happy life. Enrique's Journey is a testament to the power of family.

Enrique's Journey is a well-written book that keeps the reader totally engaged. Nazario has done much research and presents a well-rounded, factual account of the perils that these children are facings as they flee poverty in Central America and bandits in Mexico. Also explored are the reasons why so many young parents, as well as their children later on, feel the need to endure these hardships (and even death) to reach the U.S. Middle school and high school teachers should encourage their students to read this book, exposing them to real-life and real-time adversity. Spirited debates will probably follow. There is so much that we in the U.S. think we know about problems like this, but until we read a book like Enrique's Journey instead of just watching the news, we'll never have the full story.

An insightful true story. I found that several of my male students had ridden atop Mexican trains and experienced some of these same traumatic events.

I got a little lost with all the statistics and I feel very sad for what illegal immigrants go through to get to the USA. Then finding out that it's not such a perfect place to be like they see on television. The distance between mother and son is also disturbing when they finally meet and I have such compassion for both of them and why they do what they do.

This should be required reading for everyone who wants to take up angry signs and storm buses bring children escaping horrific conditions and find peace. screaming at them to go home. I was so moved by this book that I ended up sponsoring a young man in Honduras, figuring that I can't make a difference in the world, but maybe I can make a difference in this young man's life.

Enrique's Journal reveals real life for mothers who have left their children in a Latino country to find a better world for themselves and their children? How do the children left behind feel? What happens when they decide they must reunite? Americans cannot understand it without reading this book. It should be required reading in grades 9 to 12.

I loved how detailed and descriptive this book was. This story really puts a slap of graciousness on your mind when you read and imagine the struggle people had to go through just to become a citizen of the United States. This is something that we take fore granted but now that I have read this book I will certainly be more grateful for what God has blessed me with.

This is a very enlightening and enriching experience. I felt this was more descriptive than many movie attempts have been at sharing this experience. It provided me with better insight to share with friends and a better perspective of what similar people feel. It is however not to disregard the unsuccessful journeys as they are very valuable and important to improving societal perspective as well.
