Farnsworth is very bright, with an active inquiring mind. In "The Legal Analyst" he explains legal principles, both as they are and as they might ideally be. He uses a discursive style, but organized by devoting each chapter to a different principle. The law is difficult and principles are inconsistently applied, not to mention that law varies by state. Often, the principles Farnsworth discusses are not used explicitly, but may underlay the decision making of judges even if they do not realize it. This all makes for a not totally satisfactory read, although if you love logical arguments you will love this book. I found that I most enjoyed the concrete cases, and discussion of the more widely and explicitly accepted legal principles. I had already been exposed to the psychological basis of decision making, such as anchoring and framing, but if you have not those chapters might be of particular interest. Consider the case where a cow manages to reach a road, causing an auto accident. One legal ideal is maxium efficiency; i.e. reducing the burden on the legal system including the resources of litigants as well as judges. The idea of efficiency is one basis for statutes of limitations, even when their application can lead to injustice in the colloquial meaning of the word. One might therefore conclude that the rancher should always be held liable for the cow/car accident. However, there is another principle that a person like the rancher is not liable if he/she takes all the precautions that are reasonable, so the accident apparently still can go to trial on that basis. An interesting example of statute of limitations, not cited in the book, is a recent decision by the North Carolina Supreme Court that a group of homeowners in North Carolina can't sue a company that contaminated their drinking water because a state deadline has lapsed - even if residents did not realize their water was polluted until years later. Suppose a piece of art is stolen. No matter how many times it is resold, the original owner can still claim ownership. Now suppose the original owner loses the art work due to fraud instead of outright theft. If a subsequent buyer purchases the item in good faith, and not at some huge bargain price, the purchaser maintains ownership. The justification is that the original owner should have been more careful but he/she cannot try to prove due diligence as a basis of reclaiming the painting. This is the type of concrete, consistent decision making I found most satisfactory. Conversely, suppose a photo processor promises to take your old photos, which mean a lot to you, and make them computer readable, but loses the photos instead. Regardless of efficiency, and disclaimers in the processor's literature, you can claim compensation above the minimal value of what it costs to produce a photo; but how much should you be compensated? There are various ideas that Farnsworth puts forward for computing the value, but in fact there may be great discrepancy in what is awarded and only ambiguous guidance; in one case the award was $7,500. For maximum efficiency, I would have though the customer should have been given the opportunity to purchase insurance against loss and that would be the only recourse.

This is THE book for anyone who wants to understand the rationale behind the key legal rules that govern society. It's readable and interesting -- not one bit dry! -- and presents the theories in a logical order, building from the simplest (ex post vs. ex ante -- or downstream vs. upstream reasoning) to the more complex tools, such as game theory's Prisoner's Dilemma. It encourages the reader to ponder why the creation of incentives for good behavior in a complex world is a challenge, and explains just how the easy solutions can go badly wrong. In short: it helps you think clearly and deeply about big issues by providing a very nice set of "Thinking Tools." (I wish all our Senators and Congressmen were required to read this; it would surely elevate the level of the debate.)For the student contemplating law school, this would be a fine introduction to legal reasoning. It would set you up well for the first year's work, especially in Contracts and Torts.

The author says he intends his book to be of interest to "law students, lawyers, scholars, and anyone else with an interest in the legal system". The pity is that most people are unaware of the impact of the legal system and its impact on their daily lives. A book like "The Legal Analyst", unfortunately, is not for the average citizen. It took me months of nibbling, reading a bit at a time, to get through these fascinating, but densely written book. "The Legal Analyst" is excellent: informative, learned and challenging, all at the same time. The alternative title considered was "Thinking Like a Law Professor" and that might have been more appropriate. The value of the book is that instead of discussing rules as so many law texts do, Professor Farnsworth introduces us here - quite effectively - to tools for thinking about the law. I am not a lawyer, but lawyers are my clientele and I play a role in litigation as an expert witness and consultant. I am also an American who is very concerned about the direction of the nation and the fate of its Constitution, the very document that makes us a nation of laws. Professor Farnsworth is a gentle guide. He avoids footnotes. He doesn't use dry academic language. He is, matter of fact, pretty straightforward. But the subject matter itself, while always challenging, is sometimes dry. There are thirty chapters on the tools of legal thought, prefaced by a introduction that poses an interesting challenge. If a robber enters a bank, takes customer hostage and threatens to kill a hostage if he doesn't get $5,000, should the bank be held liable when the robber gets no money and kills the hostage? (I'm not going to tell.) On the whole, only the truly committed will make it through this book. It is not because of any lack of quality or scholarship: it is simply a difficult read. Those who do complete the trek will be rewarded with an expanded knowledge of the logic of the law. I do wish Professor Farnsworth would consider writing a version of "The Legal Analyst" for the average person - such a book is truly needed.Jerry

I am starting law school this fall and needed something to get me on the right track... I think this book is doing the job... It is teaching me how to think... Interesting huh, we come here already knowing how to think? However, it is teaching me to think outside the box, think in multiplicity, and to think of things as wholes.. Everyday folk tend to look at things microcosmically, we can't help it because we only have to worry about ourselves or the unit (family) we belong.. I think (because I am not one yet) a lawyer must look at the big picture and see how his client fits into the scheme of things... This is what Farnsworth is teaching me.... He is doing an excellent job... Thus, he has written a great treatise on this subject. That is, learning how to think, not necessarily like a lawyer... This is a great book for everybody.

I did not really want to read this book it just seemed to be the lesser of evils when it came to this months prime picks. The beginning did not encourage me much as it was a little on the depressing side. When Jaya escapes to India to escape her pain of multiple miscarriages the story starts to get interesting - and I ended up staying up all night reading it. Jaya begins to hear a story about her grandmother, Amisha, and it helps her to understand her own mother and in the end she learns to take another perspective when looking at her own life. This was a fantastic read. I cried and I never cry. Your heart goes out to Amisha's situation and the way it works out. Aside from the grandmothers story you also see a heartbreaking look at the poor side of India and how some of their traditions have hurt them. The caste system still is there is the more rural places which is where this story takes place. The description of the orphanage Jaya goes to is heartrending and makes you want to go to India and change things. The story makes so many of the things we have heard of come to life -things we have never been acquainted with. The rest of the story of Amisha's life is something that you will have to read for yourself and I guarantee you will love her story.

I will begin my review at the end of the story. Usually, when I enjoy a book, I don't want the story to end. I was comfortable letting this story end. Not because I disliked it. But, because the author did such a terrific job of tying up all of the loose ends. This book was a very emotional experience. Almost exhausting. I just could not stop reading. This explains why, as much as I enjoyed reading this book, I was content with it ending. It was beautifully written. I felt as if I'd been transported to India. In my mind, I could vividly picture the characters, the settings, the time period. I hurt when the characters hurt and was jubilant when the characters were happy or celebrating joyous events. Would I read another novel by this author? I am afraid not. I am emotionally spent. I am way too empathetic. But, the author did her job; she drew me into the story. She also enlightened me as far as the history of India. Great read!

I thought this was a terribly written book. It was a Kindle First selection so at least I didn't pay for it. It was a story that has been told over and over - forbidden love and resulting pregnancy. The facts relating to Indian life in India feel more like the author awkwardly showing, "Look! I did research!" more than part of the story. On the other hand, details that were included, such as the homemade toothbrush the servant was sure the main character would like, were never mentioned again. WELL DID SHE LIKE FINALLY TRY IT? Other daily trials of living in poverty in modern day India were left out; how about going into as much detail about toilet facilities in the family home as taking a shower? Now THAT would have been culture shock coming from modern-day America. And then other things - traditional Indian women wore petticoats in the time of WWII? There's an American hospital that specializes in polio treatment in modern times, when polio has long been eradicated in the US? - don't ring true. I mourn the loss of book editors. Being able to self-publish has ruined reading for me. I guess I should stick to the classics.

I'm not a professional reviewer and rarely write reviews but this book just took me away to a different culture and to lives that loved and lost so much. The writing is beautiful and captivating. With every page turned, I wanted a new page. We take so much for granted in the US that we often forget how difficult life was and is in many other lands. The heartbreak, the passion and love is universal and the author conveys this while the actual story is set in a different time in India where women were no more than servants, yet those same women as in Amisha had hopes and dreams. Beautifully written in such a way that I was saddened when I read the last word.

This month, only two stories provided any glimmer of interest for me. Then, a review of one of the two dissuaded me from reading that one. So, I took a chance on "The Storyteller’s Secret,” even though it sounded a bit too common. Would I be inspired? Would I be letdown? Is this story merely a good read, or is it something more?Read on to learn what I found…POV: Starts out in first person, but then shifts to third person.THE WRITING: Frankly, the first three or four chapters were, well, sensitively written, but not particularly interesting for me. Essentially, they were written to show why our heroine travels to India. Parts were gripping, but other parts felt as if the author was trickling information instead of painting a picture. Yeah, it was a bit like my writing, so I shan’t be too critical. By Chapter 6, when we travel back in time to the 1930’s, the POV changes to third person and becomes much more engaging.I don’t want to give any spoilers, but I did feel relieved to begin reading of Grandfather Deepak and Amisha. Suffice it to say that I lived in Egypt for a number of years and fell in love with an Egyptian lady and we married in 2002. To this day, I still tend to not fully fathom the society my wife was raised in. Even so, I am able to get a glimpse of the different views of Indian society and its strict adherence to their customs. If readers keep this in mind while reading “The Storyteller’s Secret,” it may help them navigate the nuances hinted at.It is important to note that journalists, (of small newspapers and large) are always reminded to keep their opinions out of the stories they write, because it is important for readers to see what is happening so they can arrive at their own conclusions. I found this easy, usually, as did the protagonist in this tale of woe, which became an epiphany for her upon learning the sordid details of her grandmother. Saying such is not a spoiler, as without some sort of story arc, there would be no reason to relay such a tale of fiction that almost could be true.BLUSH FACTOR: As for language and sex, no worries here.ADVENTURE: To explore the fictional tale of a family history in a foreign land (India) is an adventure of sorts, but this is not an adventure on the scale of, say, Emerald Forest. This adventure is more of one from one society to another. Rather than refer to this tale as a story of adventure, it is more a quest for discovery.SOUL: Yes, this has soul. When you can read the plight of someone raised in a society with vastly different customs, and the strict adherence by most to those customs, and still feel empathy for them, that is a story with soul. To some extent, I suppose, my view of Indians of Asian descent was enhanced because of this story. Not to an earthshaking extent, but I am moved.EXCERPTIn this excerpt you will likely deduce that Amisha is a strong-willed Indian woman heavily influenced by the teachings of Mahatma Ghandhi, which some revered as revolutionary seeking more than mere independence from Britain, but independence from the shackles of custom. Amisha would pay the price for her convictions, but that is getting ahead of the story…‘…Amisha remembered Chara’s order to find a servant she could trust. Because Ravi did not live in her village, he would not be part of the crowd whose loyalty would be to Chara first. She gnawed on her lip as her palms started to sweat and her heart fluttered. Even as the plan hatched, she feared she was inviting Chara’s wrath.“You would work anywhere?”“Who are you?” Frustration laced his words.He kept glancing around them. Amisha knew he was afraid of being beaten. She had seen it before when an untouchable spoke to a woman of a higher caste.“I am the daughter-in-law of the mill’s owner,” Amisha replied quickly. She said it without pride since her position in society mattered little to her. At the widening of his eyes, she added, “Work for me.” If she waited any longer, she feared talking herself out of it.“It is cruel for you to joke.” Ravi turned away, barely masking his disgust.“I am not laughing, and neither should you be.” The man’s desire to be more than what was allowed struck a chord deep within her, and Amisha couldn’t imagine a better comrade for herself. “Take the offer or don’t. At any rate, although the writing is not one of those 'life-changing' books, it is a good read by a talented writer of Indian descent. Loved, loved this story. So much excitement, adventure, danger, and resolution. Finally an end in this part of the adventure. Love Reynolds cannot wait for the next adventure to start.

I am delighted that Craig has decided to continue this series. This was a great read to wrap up the current storyline in preparation for future adventures. I am looking forward to finding out where the Reynolds character(s) and crew go from here. Hopefully we won’t have too long to wait.

This series really keeps getting better, but this one was orders of magnitude bigger and better!I literally had to read this in one go, because I just had to see how things were going to shake out.I was not disappointed. The action in this series has always been tight and descriptive, but this one just felt so intense.Set a few months after book four, the crew have taken time to upgrade the ship, their gadgets and their skills. This really shows in the affore mentioned action scenes, where the crew acts with decisiveness and skill as a unit. This is an aspect that helped the characters feel more cohesive not just as a fighting force, but as characters in their own right.I won't spoil anything, but the journey does take them to a world (or two!) that they've previously visited and they see the consequences of their actions in previous books.I don't want to say more to avoid ruining anything, but I do want to say how thrilled I was to learn that this won't be the final book in this series!I cannot wait to see what comes next for Reynolds and crew!

Terrific from beginning to end. Didn’t stop one I started. I am really excited to see where we go in book 6. Finger snaps to the author *you rock*. I loved Craig’s writing with all the action as well as team camaraderie. I also love his You Have Been Judged series as much as this one.

I came across this author and can't get enough of the books that he's written. I have two toddlers and they love every story that we have read by Chris Van Dusen. The illustrations are amazing; and there is so much detail we love to look through the pages to see what we have missed from a previous reading.Mr. Magee and his dog Dee decide to take a boat trip; they wake up early pack a lunch but when they see a pod of whales, they are in for quite a surprise on what they thought was going to be a peaceful day.If you have young children I would HIGHLY recommend this book and anything that he has written. I'm already planning out who I can give this book to for future birthdays and baby showers.

Extraordinary illustrations. The composition, design and color are great. It makes it all exciting and very professional. I'm not a big fan of rhyming books but this was actually very fun to read as an adult. It surely is a great collection to have as a paperback too. The kids had lots of fun, the story incited their imagination and discussion. I love a great children's book with a lot of improbable and surreal adventures.

Predictable rhyming with creative wording and vocabulary choices. These book in particular is absolute joy to read to my 3.5 year old boy. He gets a kick out of all of this authors books. This one is particularly fun and creative. As an adult, this is one of the books I enjoy reading with my son because it is fun- never a dull line. Love the illustrations with their midcentury modern flare. The author also has some nautical knowledge that is also neat to pick up on

I got the paper back version of this book as that would be significantly cheaper than the hard cover version and I was not disappointed. The whole scenario of a goofy little man and his cute dog packing a picnic to the sea for a ride on their boat is such a cozy vision to the mind. The text of the story is not too simple and has a rhyme and rhythm to it and the illustrations are amazingly scenic with a kind of a 3D effect. This book is supposed to be the best in this series. Recommended age 3-7 yrs.

Just take a look at the reviews. Many kids and families love this book. Our daughter loves this book as well. The words and rhymes are carefully chosen and very lyrical and the illustrations are masterfully done. We have given this book to other parents/kids who love this book as well. We were so impressed with this book that we bought other titles from Chris Van Dusen and we were not disappointed. If you are not sure about this book, buy the paperback version or check it out at the library. We were so impressed that we bought the hardcover edition for this title and other Van Dusen titles. Highly recommend!

My newphews love this author so much from his If I Built a Car book. I highly recommend buying all the authors work or do what my sister did and take the kids to the library and just request the books. Either way I think your kids will enjoy it. I just bought them the If I built a House book and I think it’s even better than the car one.

My kids love this book. I love that the pictures are so vibrant and full of color. It's fun to read and it's a really cute story. YouTube has videos of people reading it if you want to hear it before buying it.

This is the cutest book ever! The illustrations, clever rhyming and the story line are superb. My 3 year old Grandson loves this book. We will be getting more bt Chris Van Dusen

I tore through the last book in the Haunting of Sunshine Girl series. This was a terrific ending to the trilogy. It had everything I could have wanted and more--ghosts, demons, prophesies, sacrifice, love, betrayal.Cool twists and turns, developing relationships between Sunshine and her bio parents, a deepening of Sunshine and Nolan's relationship. A school dance and of course a super big baddie that threatens Sunshine and everyone and everything she loves. Seriously, this book rocked.I kept saying one more chapter for an hour. ;) Fantastic work, Ms. McKenzie!I loved every minute with Sunshine and I'm sad to say goodbye to her!Oh and the ending--it was epically satisfying.

Not as interesting as the 1st two books. This one seemed to drag on and on. It became boring to me. The other two books I read within 24 hours because they were fast paced and interesting. This... I forced myself to finish.

Me and my daughter love this book and the other 2 as well. Didn't take my daughter long to read all 3 books just because the story get so intense sometimes.

I enjoyed the book so much that I couldn’t put it down!! I cannot wait for the next one! I have so many questions.... I don’t believe she lost her powers after she had so much experience with the other realm. So, I will be waiting for the next story.

My daughter loves it, as far as I know she has all the books within the series. If not I'll be back (TERMINATOR VOICE).
