I actually found PhantomRin’s art work for this book before I had ever heard of the book, and it was so gorgeous that I had to see what was so awesome about it that it deserved such gorgeous fan art. Well, I looked it up and the blurb on the back was absolutely tantalizing. How could this girl be the girl that loved the Ripper? Well, this book kept me guessing as to the culprit until the grand finale and it was jaw-dropping!First, let me tell you of the characters. Our MC is the lovely, intelligent, and ambitious Audrey Rose Wadsworth, lady of London’s high society. She’s sneakily studying with her uncle, Dr. Jonathan Wadsworth the practice of forensic science, dissections and all. This, of course, is not to the liking of her father Edmund or her brother Nathaniel who both think it’s improper for any lady, especially one of her status. Then there’s the clever, Holmesian assistant to Dr. Wadsworth, Thomas Cresswell. He’s a skilled assistant and is clearly interested in Audrey Rose for more than just her intelligence, though she doesn’t care to admit that she reciprocates. These are the main players in this literary game of CLUE, though we know where the body is and what weapon was likely used, it’s the WHO and the WHY that no one can figure out.As an assistant to her uncle, Audrey Rose is drawn in to the Ripper, or Leather Apron, investigations in a very close-up way. She’s examining these poor, butchered women firsthand and everyone from the police to her family look at her askance, as if she herself is involved in something heinous for breaking society’s rules. Admittedly, her involvement probably wouldn’t have happened in this era, but it sure makes for a story that has such an element of empowerment.

Stalking Jack the Ripper was everything and more. It's the type of book that gives a reader a funk that lasts for days. At least, it happened to me.First off, I want to praise the author's style. It pulls you in, from the very first page. It's rich and detailed, but not cluttered. It shows the author has done research before- and during writing this story. Plus, I know a thing or two about certain things mentioned in the book because I happen to have a best friend that went to med school.Moving along.Secondly, the heroine. Audrey Rose is a girl after my own heart. She's smart and stubborn and strong. She doesn't care for society and its idea of how a 'proper lady' should behave or what she should do. She doesn't care about getting married or having babies. All she wants is to assists her uncle, who happens to be a doctor. She wants to learn from him, even when everything and everyone is against it and her.I rarely come across such an awesome heroine, nowadays.The book, the story, is darker. As I said, it's detailed so even the gruesome scenes are written down without being sugarcoated. After all, it tells a version of the story we've all heard and know of. Jack the Ripper. An unknown man that killed prostitutes.I loved the story Ms. Maniscalco has woven around this dark part of history. I love how she made all the characters fit in, including our mysterious and yummy hero, Thomas. By the way, I loved their back-and-forth, it cracked me up.I loved that this story has it all. It has feels. The climax broke my heart and, even though I've had a hunch about who Jack the Ripper could be, I kept hoping I was wrong.This has made the top of my fave books list - of all time - and I cannot wait to get my hands on Hunting Prince Dracula, for more Audrey Rose & Thomas adventures!Definite reread, definite 5+++ star-rating.

Stalking Jack the Ripper the book is a fiction tale, semi using the case of Jack the Ripper, London’s most famous Serial killer.The two main characters in this book is one Audrey Rose Wadsworth,(btw Kerri, if your reading this, I love her Name.) and the other is Mr Thomas Cresswell. AudreyRose decides to do something, most would consider un-lady like of the time period and her status in society. That something turns out to be a medical examiner of sorts. She decides to study the science with her Uncle because she lost her Mum very young. So during her studies, she happens to met her Uncle intern Mr Thomas Cresswell. She learns through her Uncle and Thomas of the Jack the Ripper Murders After Audrey is invited to help in the case, all hell pretty much breaks lose. All of the clues point to people close to her. She is also slowly starting to like Thomas as more then a friend,which doesn’t help matters either. Why? because lets be real who wants to fall in love or semi love while investigating famous murder. As time goes on, Audrey Rose becomes closer to everyone possibly involved in the murder.I rated this book a 5 out of 5 stars, because it is written so well. The best way to describe the story is that it wants you to look at the murders as being a puzzle for a crime solving like a person in Forensic's would study a murder .I hope all of that makes sense but before I continue I also would like to point out that this book discusses in some detail Forensic science study of dead bodies. It is the process of a Doctor or Scientist receiving a dead body to study its organs as well as sometimes studying murders. But back in Victorian days it was Called being a Cadaver which was a way for doctors or scientist to get free bodies to study what cause a person death as well or use certain body parts . While this is discuss in the book, it is not extremely detailed to point of making someone feel sick. I am a sensitive person to these types of things and this detailed did not bother me. Now on to more details about the story itself. This story is not your standard Murder mystery in the sense that its all about the murder. This book is also about Audrey Rose becoming her own person. I also honestly couldn’t believe how funny this book was, mainly from Thomas’s point of view. Thomas tends to be the one who keeps Audrey Rose on her toes and really helps to get her to think about everything. He loves the fact that she is so well educated compare to most girls of her position and the age. He tends to use humorous flirty banter towards her whenever they are together. I can’t say enough about how much I love Thomas in this book. I also loved the cover on this book. This cover which is shown above of a woman holding a knife while wearing Steampunk victorian clothing is bloody beautiful, intriguing and inviting .I honestly can’t wait to start the next book in the series which is Hunting Prince Dracula, and it comes out in September 2017 for hardcover sell.

This is a fascinating book and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the conquest of the Shang by the Zhou, as well as to serious students of the Zhouyi. This is a truly enlightening book.

Shaughnessy is the gold standard for research in the Chinese classics. This is NOT a coffee table book, but a serious research tool for the serious student. If you are interested in the subject you will wwant to own this as a part of your library. That said, the etymology in the book is thorough and well documented. His analysis of the early Chinese writing systems is focused, at times eveen exhausting to the non-student, but so good that you will be glad you made the effort. READ THE FOOTNOTES! Otherwise, you really are not geting your money's worth. The Bamboo Books, Classic of Changes, Venerated Documents, Classic of Poetry, have probably never been this well explained to the English speaking student. Enjoy!

I had an extremely hard time getting through this book, which very much surprised me. I had read another book by Michael Novacek, which was quite good and a book I would recommend, "Dinosaurs of the Flaming Cliffs." His current book "Time Traveler" really misses the mark. I think the main problem, is that Mr. Novacek is a Paleontologist, and a quite good one I should add, but he's not a very exciting writer. He has chosen to write about all his experiences in the feild, from the very beginning of his career and sometimes that's just not very interesting. I was bored because even Mr. Novacek sounded like he was bored in describing some of his early field excursions. He writes much more about his dangerous run-ins with the locals, than he does about the fossils he is out to find. As a matter of fact, he seems to find very little in the way of significant fossil material throughout the whole book. Other than his trip to Mongolia, which he has already written about in his previous book, I found nothing I thought was worth writing about. I guess the bottom line for me is, I highly respect Mr. Novacek as a Paleontologist, I just think he wasn't very excited with the material when he wrote this book and it shows. I am therefore afraid I cannot recommend this book. I would like to recommend a book that I have recently read, that I think is very good. "Dragon Hunter" by Charles Gallenkamp. This is adventure and excitement at it's greatest. You won't fall asleep reading this book

A little "ponderous". Kind of a life sketch more than an interesting account of finding actual dinosaurs.

Not a bad book, could have had more illustrations and examples of fossils found in different parts of the world.

Not exactly what we expected....a little hard to follow....son didn't finish the book....for upper reading level.....more of a story than facts...

This book learns us a lot about prehistoric life.It shows also how very difficult it is to search for fossils.

After Michael Novacek wrote _Dinosaurs of the Flaming Cliffs_, a very successful non-specialist account of his fossil-hunting expeditions in Mongolia, he found that readers told him that they especially enjoyed his descriptions of the expeditions and life in the field, perhaps even more than the substantial paleontology he included. With that in mind, he has now written _Time Traveler: In Search of Dinosaurs and Ancient Mammals from Montana to Mongolia_ (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux), which does not scrimp on scientific information, but still consists mostly of stories about how paleontologists do what they do. Interested in fossils even as a boy, in graduate school he got interested in extinct insectivores, which are now represented by hedgehogs, shrews, and moles, but which were much more diverse in the past. Novacek admits that these aren't the showiest of ancient animals: "they might be more aptly called vermin than beasts." But in an evolutionary sense, they have vast importance; from such shrewlike creatures came rodents, bats, elephants, whales, and of course, humans. He shows us what sort of work he has done on the creatures, and why it has been important.The book's main attraction is his stories of field work all over the world. They are told with good humor, and occasionally with forgiveness. He starts as a novice, worried that the graduate students are going to play tricks on him, and eventually ends up leading expeditions himself, to Baja, Mongolia, the Andes, and Yemen. Reading these tales makes one realize that there truly must be a fantastically strong appeal for this sort of work, if Novacek still likes it after all the difficulties he experienced, from mildly irritating to potentially lethal. "Our hands were swollen and blistered from swinging sledges all day, and our backs were sore from cradling heavy plaster blocks as we climbed the steep slope back to the vehicles. The work was hard. But I liked the routine, I felt useful; we were a chain gang in the service of science." There are a few tales worthy of Indiana Jones, like how his party is ominously detained by the militia in Yemen. In the Andes, he is tangled in the stirrup of a horse and dragged down painfully, temporarily ruining his legs. He is bitten in the groin by the world's most deadly scorpions in Baja. He discovers that a desert can bloom into swarms of insects denser than that in a rain forest because they are attracted to sweat. There are bar fights. Shrapnel from a colleague's hammer on a specimen severs one of his arteries. "As some of my college mates would say, `It's a lot of trouble for a few old bones.'"Novacek's animated tales and explanations of how he has done his work give genuine insight into his passion. He has included lots of real science here about plate tectonics, evolution, and much more. For those who never graduated beyond childhood dinomania, it will tell them what they missed. Best of all, this book ought to be in the hands of young people who are in the thralls of such enthusiasm, for in its pages are revealed what it is really like to be a paleontologist.

As it weaves together a broad ranges of stories going all the way from the nineteenth century to the present, this book makes three very important points: (1) what we've been seeing in Wisconsin over the past couple years has been in the works for a long time, and is the result of a longstanding strategic effort from the Right; (2) what's happened in Wisconsin will also happen in other states, if it hasn't already; (3) if it wants to undo some of the damage done, the Left (and the Democratic Party in particular) better get its act together--to start with, by reading this book and taking its lessons to heart.

The Fall of Wisconsin is motivated by many questions in the mind of its author Dan Kaufman and shared by others. How can a state that held in the popular mind the position of the home of Progressivism in the times of trouble of flaming inequality and corporate power at the turn of the 20th century transform so? Wisconsin’s Progressives championed the public sector against encroachment by the private one, famed Robert La Follette instituted numerous reforms—direct primaries, a ban on corporate donations to political candidates, civil-service protections—to encourage citizen participation in government and helped establish Wisconsin as a bastion of democratic; where Wisconsin had created the first unemployment-insurance program, and was the first state to recognize collective bargaining rights for public employees and developed other changes that were to reappear as FDR’s New Deal.Now under Scott Walker it has become a model for breaking civil service unions and starving the public sector, steep cuts to K–12 public schools and the state university system, and a significant decline in water quality with the environmental agency forbidden to use term ‘global warming.’Rich Graber current president of the of the Bradley Foundation asked if the new model could be exported, the foundation’s success in Wisconsin, to other states places that might be viewed as impregnable “blue walls,” just as Wisconsin was not long ago. “Sure,” Graber replied, without hesitation. “That’s where it goes. Wisconsin is a laboratory for the rest of the country.” (p.266)Dan Kaufman opens this topic brilliantly by showing Wisconsin’s rich history and then the intervention of conservative infrastructure with policy formation offered by American Legislative Exchange Council, also known as ALEC. Dozens of states have passed versions of ALEC model laws that diverted public-school budgets to private education, restricted voting rights, and decimated labor unions and environmental regulations. (p. 122)He details the struggle of opposing forces to resist Walker’s programs with mixed results but primarily failures due to Walker’s ability to Divide and Conquer.His conclusion: “… as long as they remembered what had been, they might reclaim the state they knew and loved.”* This is a insightful study of the battles for change in American politics today.5 Stars*He would be pleased to see shortly after publication Tony Evers (Dem) defeated Scott Walker (Rep) to become governor-elect of Wisconsin, with his running mate Mandela Barnes becoming lieutenant governor-elect.

It is a remarkably well done description of the destruction of Wisconsin’s traditions of good and collaborative government, great education system and traditions, remarkable environmental and social policies and accomplishments. A proud heritage that was nearly a century in the making was systematically destroyed. It is a dreadful story that is a remarkable read.

The Fall of Wisconsin is a page-turning tale of people I personally regard as heroes and villains, but the book surprised me in being much less of a partisan rant and much more of an impassioned chronicle of political activism on all sides being integral to the DNA informing Wisconsin's identity.Extremely informative and enjoyable to read, this book is a crash course on the labor movement in America, the history of the Midwest and how grass-roots politics really works at a local level in the 21st-century U.S. It will make you angry, sad, and hopeful all at once. What more could you ask for?

The book gave a good summary of the rise of Wisconsin's progressive values in the 19th and 20th centuries, and an outline of the current round of politicians who have (temporarily) made Wisconsin more like Kansas. It was great to hear the stories again of Bob LaFollette, Aldo Leopold, and Gaylord Nelson, three of my public policy heroes. I'm sorry to see the damage done by Paul Ryan, Scott Walker, and other selfish and divisive political leaders. Maybe we will all learn to resist these manipulators in the future.

This book is the seminal work on what went into making Wisconsin's political climate what it is today. Though disheartening in its candor, it helps put into perspective what went wrong with a state that was once lauded nationwide for its clean politics and innovative government.

A very good book chronicling the Republican takeover and destruction of the State of Wisconsin. Former Gov Walker was little more then a Butler for the corporate interests in WI, and took care of them at the expense of Public Employees, Teachers and more. In short, a vile and despicable individual... Oh, and his jobs/economic record wasn't anything to write home about either...

This book is eye opening on all of the Wisconsin Ideas that have been lost over the past eight years. I covers the history of Progressivism and how Wisconsin had been a national leader. It is motivational in that I want to stop the loss of Wisconsin and return us to our progressiveWisconsin history of caring for people over money, people over corporate and return to valuing education.I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the progressive movement in Wisconsin and the USA.

Wonderful book of essays that warm my heart. I love many of the writers and especially enjoyed reading Stephanie Pearl-McFee discuss the need to cull her stash of yarn. As the owner of a fair amount of yarn, her essay gave me food for thought about what I really want from my stash. Enjoyable read for knitters.

Only 4 stars because some essays were smoke, not fire. And why no small mill owner? Or one of the many yarn dyers/hand painters that make a visit to an LYS so necessary?

This was a delightful read. I was able to read a chapter here and a chapter there, whenever I had a moment to read. Each "yarn star" gave a different perspective on their stash and it gave me a new appreciation for my own stash. A light, fun read for any fiber enthusiast. I highly recommend it to any one who has a stash of their own.

This is a book about people's love/hate relationships with yarn. Do you hoard or keep just enough on hand to finish your current, singular, project?
