Recommended by my horn teacher, and she was right. Work your way through this book, and you will be practicing by steps the things that will help make you a much better horn player. Of course, feedback from a good teacher is even more useful, but if you have an ear for what your instrument should sound like, you can make a lot of progress with the exercises here with limited instruction (beyond the how to, of course).This is NOT a "how to play the horn" book. It is a series of exercises and etudes to play that focus on the things you need to execute, roughly in the order you will want to learn them. If you already play a brass instrument, this is THE perfect book for you to start on the horn with.I haven't checked, but the "Second Book" was not available through Amazon or the marketplace at the time I bought this book - it may be by now.
I'm a beginner, so not sure my opinion is much use. But this book has nice graded etudes in a variety of keys and styles. It stresses dynamics, and at least for me, each etude seems to have a finger twisting phrase or an interval which is impossible (at first) to play in tune. I like playing in this book far better than my assigned lesson books.
Wanted this for one of my private students, I remembered playing it myself as a young player. Short but demanding exercises to challenge but not defeat a young player.
Excellent book for a beginning student. I've used it for years.
This is a collection of pieces, all of them short, ranging from very easy to moderate in difficulty. Useful to students who have been playing only a short while to those who are more advanced.
