I am a huge fan of The Biltmore and this book was hard to put down! It is so well written. It was so interesting to hear the personal, behind the scenes information about the family members and the struggles they have endured to keep the Biltmore in excellent condition. William Cecil has poured his life into this cause and it is for the benefit of us all. This book contains so much history and is one that I will read over and over. Just wonderful!! If you have not seen the Biltmore in person, you will be blown away if and when you visit.
If you love Biltmore Estate and George Vanderbilt, this is a must read. I read "Lady On The Hill" and I could not put it down. William A.V. Cecil devoted his life to restoring Biltmore Estate to its former glory. Many people told him he would not be successful in his venture but he proved them wrong. I highly recommend this book.
The book LADY ON THE HILL is a great read, it tells how George and Edith Vanderbilt's daughter, Cornelia, her husband John Cecil, and their sons, William and George saved the Estate and have made it into one of the most visited houses in the world. The book also gives a history of George Vanderbilt's visited to Asheville, N.C. falling in love with the area, buying up the land to build his dream house and his dream of preserving the Mountains.The first time I visited "The Lady on the Hill" was in late July of 1987, the Rose Garden was in full bloom. We went on the tour of the new Biltmore Winey . The Dairy barn was converted into the Winery which opened in May 1985. We tasted some of the excellent wines. In October 2000,Biltmore had a Medieval Festival, we visited the house and gardens. The hardwood trees were showing her most beautiful colours and the Fall flowers were blooming in the gardens.. In March of 2008, I visited it again with friends from out of town, it was very cold. We ate brunch in the Deerpark restaurant that was renovated from the Calf Maternity Barn. The food was excellent. Again we visited the winery where they had introduced more varieties of wine.Please read this book and then visit Biltmore, there are excellent B&B's, Inns, and of course Biltmore has its own hotel.
After visiting Biltmore for the first time, I was interested to learn more about it's history. This book helped answer many of the questions I had and I learned many things about the estate, from it's early history to the present. The later chapters covering Mr. Cecil's challenges to balance having a historic estate open to the public, while maintaining the originality of the property are just as interesting. I definitely will return to Biltmore in the future and this book will have me looking with new eyes.
This is one of those books that once I started it, I couldn't put it down. I had just returned from visiting the Biltmore and decided that I wanted to know more about the story behind the house. This book does a wonderful job of presenting not only the story of the house itself, but also of the entire estate and how it became what it is today. This doesn't go into extreme detail about the day-to-day running of the estate. It does give you a very good picture, though, of how easily it could have gone down a path of deterioration and ruin. If you've visited the Biltmore, but still have more questions running around in your head then you should definitely pick up this book.
This is a real story of survival. It is the story of a man who would not let the nay-sayers keep him from thinking and accomplishing things others thought impossible. Mr. Cecile, is an inspiration to any person attempting to start a business or accomplish a given task. My wife and I have visited Biltmore Estates several times over the last 25 years and have been season ticket holders for two years. We have taken every tour at least once and we throughly enjoyed each on. Biltmore Estates continues to improve and the staff treat you as a guest. They make a profit to improve their product and make it more enjoyable for their guests. If you have visited or plan to visit Biltmore Estate this book is a must read. The survival of the Biltmore Estate is as great a story as its design and construction.
I had always wondered how the Biltmore go to the present day's level of interest! This book tells the story of how the Biltmore has become a major attraction of interest. Very well written and very interesting to follow. I highly recommend the book.
