Having recently passed the July 2013 Michigan Bar Exam, I found Glazier's supplement to be highly helpful. This supplement deserves five stars because it can be used by anyone preparing for the Michigan's bar exam: a first-time test-taker, anyone studying on their own, and even those using one of the large test-prep company programs.I used this supplement in conjunction with one of the large test-prep company programs and I can assure you that, although some of the questions were covered under my program, this supplement was still well worth the money. This supplement contains over a decade of past Michigan bar exam essay questions. In addition, most of the essay questions also contain student answers and model answers from the Michigan Board of Law Examiners. What made this supplement most helpful was that the student answers are graded, so you can not only compare your answer to another student's, but also see what type of student answer gets what score from the grader's perspective. There are two absolutely crucial reasons to buy this supplement even if you are using a test-prep program. First, this supplement contains so many old state essay questions that you can tell what legal rules are tested more often from exam to exam. I was able to focus my studying and memorizing efforts. Second, the amount of old essay questions also allows you to see pretty much every question pattern that the Michigan Board of Law Examiners can possibly throw at you. For instance, the personal property question on the July 2013 examination was quite similar to an older personal property question contained in this supplement. I didn't even have to outline that question on the exam because I already knew how to structure that question's answer and I knew the rules by heart. Needless to say that question was one of three questions that I received a "10" on.There are some slight downsides to Glazier's text. First, it has not been updated since 2011 and there have been some significant changes since then. The Michigan Board of Law Examiner's has not only changed the weight of each section on the exam, but also appears to have given the essay portion of the exam more scrutiny. It would be helpful if this supplement was updated with some recent essay questions and graded student answers. Second, this supplement contains only questions and answers. There are no bullet point lists of what you need to know for each section, or any other sort of outline guide. Nevertheless, reading through each question and taking notes on what legal rules were examined is still extremely helpful.Regardless of any defects that this supplement might have, I highly recommend it for any future Michigan Bar Exam test-taker. I just passed the July 2015 Michigan Bar Exam and this book was definitely a critical reason why. It helps you get a sense of what REAL student answers look like and the scores that they received, which is relieving compared to the over-inclusive & impossible to match bar prep company essay answers. It teaches you about the question "clusters" which were SPOT ON during the real exam. Over lunch break I knew exactly which subjects remained to be potentially tested. It also helps you narrow down what topics w/in each subject come up frequently over the years. Overall, this book is ESSENTIAL for success on the MI Bar Exam! It is worth every penny!
**Update** - I passed. While I did not do exceptionally well on the essays, I can say that without this book I would have done much worse. Upgrade to 5 stars!With the increasingly hard grading of the Michigan Bar Exam essays, this book is almost necessary to own.The book explains how the exam is setup and graded as well as what topics previous exams have tested (back to the 1990's), which is extremely helpful to know what topics to study because they are so heavily tested. You can also see what types of questions are popular and repeated.I found that my bar review course did not focus its attention on Michigan specific topics, instead choosing to focus on MBE topics. This book was a great supplement to that.The only reason I give it less than 5 stars is because the author tends to only show answers that received 8-9 points. There are some 10's and even lesser answers, but she sticks to 8-9's too often.**(All of this depends on my grade on the Bar Exam.)**
Very good resource to calm your nerves when you are studying for the Bar because you can see what real students put on the Bar exam and what their score was. I would recommend this book to anyone studying for the bar. I do have to note that only essays from about 2002 through 2010 are in this book, and only some of them have student answers. Some essays have multiple student answers for just that one essay, so you can compare the scoring between them.
This book was so helpful that I felt the need to come here and recommend it. I just got my bar results the other day and thought of this book. I took the barbri class and some of my friends took kaplan, but all agreed this was the best source to study for the ESSAY portion of the Michigan bar exam. This will NOT help out on the MBE but is terrific for the Michigan Essay Portion. There are Real Essay Answers in this book, with real scores along with model answers along with a Commentary in this book that will help you understand good vs bad or average answers. I will recommend this book to everyone that asks for a good resource for the essay studying.
So I took the Michigan Barbri class and was told that this book was the reason people passed. Though I thought this book was helpful, I definitely wouldn't say it was the reason I passed (or perhaps didn't pass... still haven't gotten back the results). You definitely need other stuff to understand what these essays are even asking for. Additionally, though it was helpful to see real student's answers, it seems a little unrealistic now given that the grading has gotten harder for the Michigan bar. It would be nice if this author updated the book to include a more realistic idea of how they really grade answers now.
