This was one of the most laugh-out-loud books of the series yet. I read the Kindle version and my husband and I listened to the Audible on our recent road trip. We LOVE Space Team and I am always eager to get to the point where my hubs catches up with me via audiobook.I have been so immersed in the Space Team world over the last two years that it’s difficult to step back and tell non-Team folks just what it is I like about the whole series. I’ll give it a go, though.1) Since things went south* in 2016 here in the good ole US of A, I have desperately needed good laughs that aren’t at the expense of anyone or any group (not that I participate in that kind of humor, but when things get divisive, it can be a refuge for some). Fictional characters such as these fit the bill, and Barry provides healthy laughs galore via impossible situations, ample pop culture and obscure references, and the self-deprecating humor of the characters themselves. Space Team has honestly saved my sanity by providing hearty belly laughs and tears — and it continues to deliver.2) The overall arc of how this “team†forms throughout the first handful of books is impossibly odd, incredibly endearing, and strangely believable (if you can suspend disbelief about the whole ST universe). It is incredibly refreshing to read a world where the characters are not forced together by some unavoidable artifice on the part of the author. Rather, they gel due to wild happenstance, and it’s the fantastical nature of the wild happenstance that always makes reading Space Team fun.3) The Space Team family. No. Really. Okay. Maybe not family. But it’s a team. People from all over the world love Space Team, and we have the honor of both Barry and Phil Thron (the amazing voice talent for the audiobooks) being actively involved with and attentive to their fan base. Join us!I never like to plod through a synopsis of a book when I review it. What I want you to take away from what I write is the overall enthusiasm and faith I have in a writer and their work. Barry is a masterful storyteller and your time invested in Space Team will be well worth it if you enjoy humor, sci-fi, cheap jokes that make you roll your eyes and groan, or banoffee pie.There is a jumping-on point for new Space Team people with the most recent book (The Hunt for Reduk Topa) and it was written that way, but I’d seriously recommend starting with book one and catching up. The in-jokes will be funnier, the squirrels dodgier, and all the “feels†deeper.(*purely my subjective experience)
This is the funniest Space Team yet, but that's not all! The cast is HUGE (mostly characters we know from previous books) and is handled masterfully. The story is complex, but like all of Barry's books it's told with humor, finesse, and of course, he wraps it all up in the end with a nice big bow, leaving you wanting for nothing more... than the next book!Why are you still reading this? Just download it already! :)
Hutchison, you magnificent bastard, you served up Nana's blue plate special with a side of spit nibbles. That is a very good thing. Everyone still alive is here. Oh wait... there's a dead guy as well. So yeah everyone "We're all going to definitely die! Like totally Lorens piloting. I fonkin hate you man. I know (wink) That's a Carver council guarantee. What's that smell? What ye lookin' at ye great hairy bollocks. And other things. Things like giant cannibals. I mean giant SPACE cannnibals, way way too many enemy ships, the four horsemen of the spacepocolipse, a sort of Sith kind of guy, who's a real dick. It's the end of the universe for sure. Or is it? You know, this review is kind of pointless. If you've been reading the series why do you need a review to decide to read this? Just do it already. If you haven't you need to go back to the first volume. now. Stop reading this fonk off shiznod.
Loved this book. As the series progresses, the jokes get funnier and the emotional undercurrent becomes more... uppercurrent.My only issue: I didn’t read the Deadman novels, so the beginning left me confused until I was up to speed with characters from that series. Once I got past that, the book was delightful.
I tore through this book as soon as I started. I've laughed and I've cried and loved the trip down memory lane seeing the assorted cast of characters from books past.I started this series to try something different and I've not been disappointed.The characters are lovable and so easy to cheer for. I've loved the world building and the interconnected lives that were written.In short I fonking love this shizz!!!
The Space Team series has become one of my favorites of all time. Hutchinson is a very funny writer who has some incredibly original stories to tell. I hope he never stops.This particular book involves the team traveling through space and time to right some wrongs and to save the universe, of course. It brings back several of our favorite supporting characters from previous books (like Dan Deadman, Nana Joan, and more) so it’s packed with even more fun than I expected.If you love goofy humor and solid Sci Fi then you’ll like this whole series. ( I’d recommend starting with the first one, though.
I am, to put it simply, a huge fan of Barry Hutchison's works. They aren't always perfect, but they are consistently entertaining. I have grown quite attached to his characters and always look forward to more.This book, though, tried to do too much. It pulled together a bunch of characters from across his universe, then it barely used any of them except the main crew. It lacked some of the manic energy that has characterized the Spacde Team books, as well.That being said, it is still a strong entry and worth the read. It is just a weaker Spade Team story than I expected.
I have to admit, this had the potential to go off the rails having, in effect, 3 different casts all mashed together. But it was pulled off exceptionally well, had some great twists and turns, and the expected level of humor, danger, and hijinx.Frankly, I'm always amazed at how well Mr. Hutchison plots these out for how quickly they are written and published. It's comedy and light-hearted, but the twists and turns are brilliantly produced and executed. Readers shouldn't expect it to be simplistic or full of hand-wavium just because it's comedy.
