Hey Nathan,I'm a listener of your podcast and just wanted to say thank you! I was scoring in the low-160s for the longest time, and improvement just wasn't coming. I used every other book on the market and even a couple other courses (7Sage/Powerscore), however, it wasn't until I got your LR Encyclopedia and LG Playbook that I was able to score in the 170s. After completing both books, my PT average is a 173+ over my last 5 tests.One thing that people need to listen to you about is your philosophy on time. You should not rush under any circumstances. I believe this mindset is responsible for my consistency and 170s scores. When I was scoring in the 160s, I was always rushing, skipping, and never focused on accuracy first. Last month I started only worrying about getting all the questions I attempt correct. It sucked at first because I was only finishing 20-21 questions, but I was getting them all right. Little by little, I was able to push that up to 22-23 correct, and now 24-25. And my LR average jumped from -4 to -2 per section.If there is one piece of advice I would tell people it is that all of these courses over-complicate everything and substitute propositional knowledge instead of good old-fashioned know-how. This test really isn't hard when you do things your way. You need to start doing timed sections and review. There's no need to over-engineer your prep with study schedules or 500-page textbooks that treat all the questions differently. In reality, they're all some derivative of flaw questions, because you should always be looking for what's wrong with it like you teach in your Encyclopedia.Anyway, sorry for rambling. I just really want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you do. Being able to score in the 170s was something I never even dreamed about. Last month my goal was to get a 165 and go to Fordham Law. Now it's a 173 and Harvard. You made that possible.Your books are literally worth their weight in gold.
Let me start by saying, that I have been self studying for a month or two. I started off reading the two Power Score Bibles (LG and LR). I found the games pretty fun and fairly straight forward right away. The Power Score LG Bible helped me to refine my technique, easily making it my strongest section.The LR Bible on the other land left me feeling under confident and scoring worse. It just made everything seems so much more complicated, I'd get to a question and think: what type is this? And that means I need to do what 5 things? And how do I test if this is correct or not? It was overwhelming and made me feel like I wasn't equipped to do well on the section. Which was obviously worrisome since half the scored test is LR.I came across the Logical Reasoning Encyclopedia, from listening to the The Thinking LSAT Podcast (http://www.thinkinglsat.com/blog/), I found Nathan's insights on the podcast helpful so I decided to try out the book. I'm glad I did. The book is very simple with short and straight forward introductions to each question type. The bulk of the book is just questions with Nathan's written inner monologue for each question. It immediately built my confidence, and started feeling fun. I haven't finished working through all the questions. After reading the introduction I decided to go through each section and to do the easy and hard questions, leaving the hardest questions for a second pass.I just took my first timed LR section since starting the book, and it felt so much better. I was able to predict the answer to most questions before reading the answer choices, and attempted more questions. I clearly need to practice more with timed sections, but I saw a 10 point increase on my LR sections. With the majority of attempted questions answered correctly and the majority of missed questions being those I did not get to.Check out the book, it is great.
The Logical Reasoning Encyclopedia is a huge book with explanations to real LSAT logical reasoning questions. The book is easy-to-follow and makes me laugh out loud as I study for the LSAT.I like how this book is organized. Questions are grouped into categories based on question types, and within each category, the question are grouped by difficulty from easy, harder, and hardest. While you can read the entire book cover to cover, you can also focus on just those question types that you struggle with. There is also an index in the back, so you can look up explanations for specific questions on the preptests you have taken. This book covers about half of the logical reasoning questions from tests 40-60, so I would not read the book cover to cover until you have done all of those tests. Otherwise, you will want to have preptests from the 60s-80s so that you can do practice tests that are not tainted by questions you have already seen.Nathan’s strategies often challenge conventional LSAT test-taking advice. I believe his approach is superior to that of many LSAT guides, and it has helped me make improvements on what was already my strongest section.Some of the reviews mention that Nathan’s wrong answer explanations are not satisfying (i.e. “This is not what we are looking for.â€) The explanations do make sense if you understand and apply Nathan’s approach, which is to find the flaw in the argument and predict the correct answer before you even look at the answer choices. If you can do this successfully, then you will probably find the explanations to be satisfying. If you aren’t able to make the same predictions that Nathan makes, then you might agree that more detail in the wrong answer explanations would be ideal.If you do have any questions as you are working through the book, you can contact Nathan directly.
