Having heard a lot about Jane Goodall and her work, along with several excerpts from her various writings, I wanted to read one of her books. I decided to start with this book because it seemed to be iconic of much of her work and summarized her life path that led her to where she is now. In general, I did enjoy the book, though there were some areas that felt like red herrings that didn't seem to fit into the larger picture. Goodall's style of writing in this book is very personal and sentimental. Rather than a commentary on external world events and environmentalism, this book reads more like an autobiography about a girl growing into womanhood. Goodall occasionally departs from the main storyline and seems to make defensive arguments concerning some of her past choices. Although these are meant to dispute past criticisms, I felt they were an unnecessary distraction, particularly because I did not agree with many of the past criticisms. Goodall tends to romanticize a great deal of her experiences and I did enjoy this for the most part, especially in her vivid descriptions of the jungle trails and interactions with wildlife. Some parts of the book read like a stream of consciousness as Goodall brings us into not only her hopes and dreams, but also her personal concerns, including some anxieties that would make anyone feel a bit neurotic, especially in social situations. This is really a personal history about Jane and her own life experiences, including her challenges and emotional responses to many of the events in her life, both positive and negative. It is a great history of the person, though for someone seeking a book about that person's work, I would look elsewhere.
I could not put this book down, and it changed my life for the better, forever. Jane's story is astonishing, and her power to tell it is both clear and charismatic. She is a master. You can not emerge without both hope, and a sense of solidarity within humanity, after following her journey to the year 2001 (when it was written). Buy, enjoy, and find the higher side of yourself awakened to an optimism that is critically neededl in the world today.
I like that Jane covers some of her experience in Gombe and describes what she found studying chimpanzees both for better and for worse. I think the book gave insight to her own unusual life, choices and spirituality. If I learned one thing from this book, it's that all people are capable of shifting perspective with the right piece of information. I would recommend _Reason for Hope_ as it's an easy read and the writing is good enough to hold the reader from the beginning to the end.
Jane Goodall's very personal account of her life, values, convictions and evolving insights results in a compelling case for human spirituality and its role in shaping a better world. Eloquently written, from the heart, and underscored with gems of her poetry, the autobiography compels the reader to introspection and self-reflection, to visualize your own life purpose and become a better person. Because that is what Earth needs, what people, animals and the environment need. In this particular book, it is rather Jane, more than the chimps, who becomes the window to a better understanding of our human nature and its potential to rise above evil. A must-read source of hope.
Look man, Jane is tops in my book. She's a little older than me, so I was fairly young watching documentaries of this woman who seemed so dedicated, so thoughtful, that she became one of my heros. Reading her book was like talking to an old friend. Long may you run Jane.
Jane Goodall is a great writer and she really gives you a feel for what it was like to have been her. You want to know what happens to her chimps. I good read for any animal lover.
A beautiful, heartfelt, inspiring and poignant memoir of Jane Goodall's remarkable life. From her nature and animal-loving youth in Bournemouth, England, to the extraordinary adult years she spent researching chimpanzees in Gombe, Africa and ultimately serving as one of the world's most preeminent ambassadors for animal rights and conservation, Reason for Hope offers deep insight into the world of Goodall - her triumphs and despairs as well as her own spiritual odyssey and the powerful roles that nature, beauty and God play in her life. This compellingly honest book encourages us to explore and bond with the natural world and to respect and appreciate all living creatures. It encourages us to act as responsible stewards of the earth and all those with whom we share the planet.
With a small amount of my life spent in Behavioural Ecology and Biology, and as a person with a Christian background, who was challenged with marrying the two together, I found this book thought-provoking and inspiring. The history of Jane Goodall's life and mentorship by Louis Leakey is fascinating enough, but her insights into what makes us human and how we might have gotten "there" kept me page turning and keeps me recommending it, especially to young people in science with the same questions about how we might think about religion in a scientific context. To those with an open mind, her story and her thoughts are worth considering and discussing--and as humans right now, we really need reason for hope, my thanks to Jane Goodall for giving me some hope and a fantastic read.
