Review

"As a teacher Sydell Rosenberg was attuned to the spirit of children, and her sophisticated and fun haiku are particularly accessible for young readers. Touching on a wide range of subjects, Rosenberg invites kids to look and look again. Her keen observations and lilting imagery will inspire them to do just that.Sawsan Chalabi’s charmingly quirky illustrations and stylized lettering present each poem with dash and personality that will enchant kids. Her delicately lined drawings are infused with vibrancy from a gorgeous color palette. Just like Rosenberg’s haiku, Chalabi’s pages are animated with a love for life that will resonate with kids―and adults.H is for Haiku would make a terrific gift for poetry lovers and a wonderful addition to home, school, and public library collections."―Celebrate Picture Books"...a delightful exploration of the alphabet through Haiku. Each page explores a moment in time with lovely, lyrical and luscious language. Colorful, playful illustrations complement the poetic text. The illustrations feature whimsical word art that enhances the reading experience." ―Writer's Rumpus

"H" is also for. . .(but this is not about me; it's about an amazing book featuring one of poetry's often misunderstood and under-celebrated forms, haiku)."The split second one starts to touch a flower--real or plastic? That's haiku. Before the hoof comes down--that's haiku." Sydell RosenbergH IS FOR HAIKU is a collection of haiku form with a tender back story. In interactions and conversations with Amy Losak, who writes the introduction to the book, at Facebook, it was the dream of her late mother, Sydell Rosenberg to publish a collection of haiku. An active member and leader within the Haiku Society of America, Rosenberg was a contributor to such projects as Haiku on 42nd Street, an urban art project that saw poetry adorning shut-down, shuttered movie theater windows and marquees.Rosenberg's verse invites us to talk about form. Haiku often gets the "easy poem" treatment for a number of reasons, I suppose. But the true nature of haiku? Not so simple as it asks us to look a little closer. To capture that moment. To bring that moment back in a tiny, three-sided frame: 5-7-5. Interacting with Losak, I learn that American haiku rarely follows the traditional form we have been taught in the classroom during poetry units. For this alone, I am grateful for this book and for Losak's expertise and appreciation of this short form.Sawsan Chalabi brings all the verse to life in illustrations that invite personification and anthropomorphism throughout. Nothing is lost in the form for Chalabi's presentation of the text which now mirrors a sort of "concrete" approach as books become skyscrapers and word-swelled raindrops fall from the top of the page. Chalabi's illustrations actually serve not only as a visual but as a sort of maker for the structure and the shape of the form featured. As my friends find this collection, they'll no doubt find their favorite page (as I have found mine). We collect ABC books in Room 407, and H IS FOR HAIKU's verse is presented in this order that takes the reader about the city to observe moments in nature and moments in humanity. From the cat to the boy to the car to the card, the text becomes a model for how the form could be used to cover the course of a day or a subject with the young reader and writer using the book as a model for how to arrange the pieces created.Bring authors and artists together around a roll of butcher paper to draft and to draw what haiku might look like if we were writing about our school, our community, our state. H IS FOR HAIKU is the perfect model text for collaborative writing and creating around a form.During National Poetry Month, we have an opportunity to celebrate poetry and poems. Students across the country will learn about the poets and about the forms. When Amy Losak made a connection with Penny Candy Books, the poetry and the teaching community were able to find and keep a little bit of treasure in a tiny book. One moment. Three lines. Seventeen syllables. And we see this form every single day; we simply don't take the time to write them down in words.

This beautiful treasury of haiku poems takes readers on a journey from A-Z, encouraging them to notice the smallest moments. Topics including a bike ride, squirrels, and the rain delight and engage. Vibrant illustrations add to the beauty of the book. And a note by the author's daughter provides information about the author and about haiku. A lovely addition to any children's book collection.

Sydell Rosenberg's Haikus have captured the essence of life. Beautifully written and beautifully illustrated. Love each and every one of the very special small moments (that speak loudly) found in this lovely book.

a wonderful collection of haiku that a daughter had published in honor of her deceased mother.

I loved this read! What a wonderful way to introduce the alphabet and Haiku all at once! I highly recommend this book.

This book is literally a work of heart. Amy Losak made it her mission to help her late mother; Sydell Rosenburg’s words take flight into the world. What is haiku? Amy says it best, “Haiku poems make small moments big.”Rosenberg’s A-Z Haiku take everyday scenes that nature paints and adds the color and the rhythm that make them dance upon our memory in a special way. They linger there and beg for the attention they rightfully deserve. So get comfortable, and share these small nuggets of nature’s beauty with the children in your life.Favorite Line- “HOLDING UMBRELLAS CHILDREN, LIKE ROWS OF MUSHROOMS, GLISTEN IN THE RAIN”Chalabi’s illustrations are eye-catching, detailed and active. I love the way the Haiku intertwines throughout the art and becomes incorporated with it. Chalabi also uses color, size and thickness in the font to put the focus on just the right words.

Amy Losak is the daughter of Sydell Rosenberg, a charter member of the Haiku Society of America in New York City in 1968. Losak has spent the last several years on a personal mission to organize and assemble her mother's work into a picture book for children—something her mother always dreamed of doing. Those efforts to revive and preserve her mother's literary legacy have finally been realized in H IS FOR HAIKU: A TREASURY OF HAIKU FROM A TO Z, published by Penny Candy Books. A collection of everyday moments, many inspired by an urban setting, Rosenberg's fresh perspective is paired with amusing and lively illustrations by Sawsan Chalabi.

"H Is for Haiku" is absolutely delightful. A picture book containing 26 haiku by Sydell Rosenberg, it is organized as an alphabet book, but doesn’t feel preachy or instructive like so many of them do. If anything, the reader forgets it’s an alphabet book long before reaching “z.”The poems capture brief, precise snapshots of life that are instantly recognizable to most kids, especially to those who live in the city. For instance, Rosenberg brings us “sweat-sprinkled” office workers lining up for ice cream on a hot day, and umbrella-holding children, who appear like mushrooms glistening in the rain. Perhaps the urban setting of many of the poems explains why there’s a visual grittiness to many of the pages (the illustrator is the gifted Sawsan Chalabi). Now deceased, Rosenberg was a charter member of the Haiku Society of America in 1968 who at times believed that easing the 5-7-5 syllable count better fits the English language. (Many if not most poets writing English-language haiku today no longer adhere to the strict 5-7-5 syllable pattern practiced in Japan.)"H is for Haiku" was championed by Rosenberg’s daughter, Amy Losak, who says it was her mother’s “dream” to publish a book of haiku for children. With its striking images of everyday life, "H is for Haiku" promises to be a great tool for helping children (and their associated adults) to see and hear the poetry in their own lives.
