This book changed my life. It addressed the specific issues I was dealing with in a difficult marriage far better than the professional counseling I had tried for more than two years. But don't merely read this book. To get maximum benefit, the reader needs to make it a part of his/her being. The first time I read it, I got very little out of it. The book is easy reading, I was just in such need of what the author is trying to teach that her message was completely over my head. But I was determined to get whatever benefit the book had to offer, so I read it again. This time I got a little out of what she was trying to say. So that gave me hope, and I read it again. The third time, I began to get it. But there was still much I didn't understand, so I read it a fourth time. This time I really began to understand; and when circumstances came up at home that I had previously reacted to with anger because I hadn't known any other way to deal with them, passages from the book began coming to my mind and I would know what to say or do that were not only free of anger, but were far more problem-solving than my anger had been. My depression began to lift. Experiencing this made me want every line of the book to become an integral part of my thinking, so I read it again. And again. After six consecutive readings, I found myself beginning to deal happily and successfully with circumstances and issues that had completely frustrated and overwhelmed me in the past. I continued to read a page or two each day out of it for a year or two after that. It has transformed my marriage and other relationships and has given me a peace of mind and self-assurance I don't see how I could have achieved any other way. As I said in the beginning, don't merely read this book. Memorize it.

This book changed my life. I wish everyone experiencing conflicts in their relationships would read it. The message being: if you keep doing the same thing or taking the same approach you will get the same results.

Amazing Book...I can't give it enough praise. I listen to it whenever I need a quick reminder to take responsibility for my decisions, and change how I respond instead of become resentful and angry with myself and the people around me. Makes life a lot lighter.

I think we all dismiss reviews that do nothing but gush and write word after glowing word about a book that we feel has changed our lives. And it's easy to dismiss those reviews until you come across that one book that makes you feel the same way. For me, it was "The Dance of Anger" by Harriet Lerner.This book was a person choice to read after finding myself often feeling frustrated and irate about things that shouldn't make me feel that way. Sometimes we can write it off as a bad day, PMS, bad night's sleep, lack of coffee, or running into grumpy people all day. Whatever the cause, it was tiresome feeling cranky. I've read other books on anger, even done workbooks, but nothing really affected me the way this book did. I can say that she laid it all out in simple terms, but she didn't. Ms. Lerner didn't take the "dumb it down" route that some authors do because they feel the readers won't understand all the psychological mumbo-jumbo.From the first page of this book to the last, I had so many "ah-ha" and "oh my Lord" and "that's me!" moments that with the highlighting and post-it flags the book now resembles a neon pinata. This book has a permanent spot on my headboard for whenever I find myself having a bad day, which I have to admit is now a rare occurrence. For the first time, after reading so many other books on anger, I finally truly understand the dance, the circle dance that we do to perpetuate the circular dance of anger. And it comes down to having the courage to step up within yourself and be the one to walk away from the dance. It's the hardest yet easiest thing I have ever done. It's been several weeks since I finish this book for the first time, and the change in my behavior is noticeable to everyone I know. And my behavior helps influence their behavior, which helps them step away from the dance of anger. Several friends and family members have purchased and read this book, and we all agree that it's a must read.By reading this book, or even taking the step to buy it, it doesn't mean that you have anger issues. Every one of us is entitled to feel grumpy and cranky and irate just as we are entitled to feel happy and less stressed and calm. Ms.Learner explains how life's little annoyances can creep into our lives and add to whatever stress we already have. Her goal is to help keep those little annoyances and stressors out of our lives, to stop the stupid arguments over who forgot to pick up the mail.If you have ever wanted to stop letting the small matters snowball into big problems, please read this book. It really will make a difference.

This book is written so well, in my opinion, and has really helped me to improve my personal life, self understanding, and relationships with others. I have learned through this book how to recognize, embrace, and use my emotions to foster good communication and relationships, rather than avoid my emotions or let my them control me. I highly recommend this book to anyone, not just someone suffering from anger. A really good read for someone looking to strengthen their self awareness and make life long behavior changes for the better.

Read to supplement Dance of intimacy recommended to me by my therapist treating my depression. This is not a how to book. the author clearly states this in the preface. It is a series of case studies that explain the background knowledge needed to understand anger and what it means and what to do about it. It is written for women in particular, but it helped me a male to understand my own anger and that of my spouse.

Lerner had a knack for articulating the fundamental issue, and offers practical tools for navigating through inescapable emotions. I took away from it a much better awareness and more accurate perspective of what is mine to own, and more important what isn't. It left me feeling optimistic, more equipped, and less frustrated.It's on my "within reach" book shelf for fast troubleshooting. Thank you Harriet Lerner!!!
