Review
Sometimes a revival is better than the original. This is true not just of theater but of love and also of the Broadway titan Harold Prince s new memoir, Sense of Occasion which is to a large degree his old memoir, annotated and updated considerably, but left with its fine patina essentially undisturbed . . . [t]he most important characters in his book and his world are not himself or the star actors, but his collaborators, who have always included the audience. This autobiography is not the grand chandelier crashing down as at the end of the first act of Phantom, but a series of warming, twinkling lights. --Alexandra Jacobs - New York TimesTo read Hal Prince's magnificent Sense of Occasion is to experience some of the musical theatre of the past sixty years in the room where it happened. It s required reading for musical theatre fans. --Lin-Manuel MirandaHal Prince's shows have inspired me and taught me so much over the years; it s wonderful to receive even more inspiration and lessons from his words. --Stephen Schwartz

This is Harold Prince's very absorbing account of his astounding contributions to the world of theater, as both a director and a producer. He pretty much covers each show he was involved in chronologically, and records his memories and opinions. He is frank in his depictions, and admits to numerous failures along the way. This is a must book for anyone who's a fan of the theater scene of the last half century.
A disappointment, mainly because its author is so brilliant. This is essentially an updating of, and a sort of meditation on, an earlier memoir. The emphasis (for me) was too heavily placed on correcting or expanding the original narrative. The best parts were when he focused on his creative process, but I could have used a lot more of that, and a lot more detail on his interactions with the other creative people he worked with, everyone from writers and composers to performers. What we get here is quite a bit about set and costume design but (for me) not enough about the workings of the most collaborative of all art forms.
I'm not quite finished with Harold Prince's Sense of Occasion but I'm finding it a fascinating read. It's much of what I had hoped it would be, an inside look at Mr Prince's Broadway career and the works he helped to create in collaboration with other theater greats. I would love an even more detailed book from Mr Prince about the creation of a play and musical play. I like to dig into the mechanics and process of the creative process with the insight of those who have been on the front lines doing it. His insight into how unions are not only necessary but also often get in the way of the creative process and can actually destroy jobs, is very interesting. The problem of unions that eat their young comes up over and over. If they want to be effective they need to get a handle on this problem. We need worker protections, especially in today's world. Anyway, read this book if you want to know more about professional theater and the process of making live theater. Thank you Mr Prince!
A curiously lifeless book, crowded with names, but bereft of interesting anecdotes (and there must be a multitude of those!). We have seen and enjoyed most of Mr Prince's Broadway shows--but none of their joy comes through here. A pity...as he is obviously brilliant at what he does.
It is so poorly written, and so haphazard in its information offered, that I was left wondering why this was not done with a professional writer and/or and editor with some authority since Prince has so much experience, knowledge, and theatrical stories to tell. Why such a careless and sloppy job? DB
An excellent insight into the world of theatre. The man has been so much a part of the theatre world but is still self deprecating with no airs and graces. Totally honest about his flops and successes. A great read.
Sense of Occasion was a very interesting book. It was quite "easy" to read and was written in a fashion to keep one's attention. Each chapter is dedicated to a particular production and provided details that were previously unknown to me. This is a MUST READ for any theater lover.
Fine substantial enlightening work on one of the Great Figures in the Theater in my many years of play-going.
