So, I really have to say I love this book. For the novice or beginning cruiser, like myself, it really gives some great insight into all the things I wouldn't normally think of. The Equipping the Galley, Provisioning, and Food Substitutions were particularly useful as well as the endless supply of great boat friendly recipes. Anyone who has tried to cook regularly on a boat knows how different and challenging it can be and how it is too often the one thing that gets overlooked or taken for granted. This book is truly a must have for cruisers of all experience levels. I have never found anything that had so much useful and practical information. Kudos on a job well done!

I use this multiple times a week. I honestly haven't found anything that was not satisfying, which gives credit to the time and extensive research and testing that went in to their book. Much of the ingredients are repeatedly used making trips to the grocery less frequent and money better spent (no one off exotic ingredients in this book). This surpasses a cooking book since it provides many tips and tricks around the galley and substitute ingredients which is never found elsewhere.

We eventually will move to the cruising life. So we started using this at home to try different recipes and see what we like and the storage life of the ingredients.The recipes are good. Some are more applicable to the boat life than others but with so many recipes, you will find ones that you will definitely love.It is one of the better recipe books that I have purchased. We will be using it on S/Y SAIL BE HAPPY

I have been reading the two authors' blogs for some time now and was eagerly awaiting their book. I was not disappointed! Not only is this a well-developed cookbook, but it is chock full of really helpful tips on provisioning, storage, and other food-related topics. I appreciate that the authors are both cruisers with experience, not just folks trying to come up with one-pot recipes that should be easy to create in a galley.

I have been waiting months for this cookbook and finally received my copy. It doesn't disappoint. I've long been a fan of The Boat Galley on Facebook and e-mail, but this book puts it all together. What a great reference...not only recipes but everything else you need to know, not just about cooking, but all aspects of living on a sailboat, whether it's for a weekend or you're a full-time cruiser. It's an amazing compilation of tips, tricks and methods to live and eat well while cruising. A great book and well worth the money. Don't go cruising without it!

Plenty of tips and suggestions to make live aboards or weekend sailors take notice. Simple techniques you may nothave thought of for everything and some excellent recipes with substitute ingredients in case you don't have whatthe recipe calls for. A lot of useful information packed into 800 pages plus they have weekly emails with additional information.

This cookbook works well at sea and on land. Provides more than recipes. Good discussion on provisioning a boat and making the most efficient use of on board storage space and food items.

I bought thls book looking for simple ways to cook on a boat. After I started reading it I realized it is a great cookbook for the home, too. Organizing a galley (kitchen) on shore is important. I would recommend this book for anyone who cooks on a boat, or in an RV, or simply wants some straight-forward recipes and kitchen ideas. I got the Kindle Fire version so I can add it to my library with zero shelf space, another nice feature when on a boat or traveling in an RV.

Great reference for the area. Don't trust the reviews. The hikes are definitely harder than the author describes them. I've hiked all my life, so I don't think I'm being a wimp.. :)

In my opinion this is the best hiking book for Virginia. The trail guides are accurate and provide great information. I originally borrowed this book from the Library and then had a hard time finding this book online for sale, eventually discovered that this book is now under the title of "Hiking Virginia" and is published by Falcon.

Terrific book! Not only does it provide all the necessities for hiking in Virginia, it also provides a great deal of entertainment. Anyone considering braving the wilds of the Old Dominion shouldn't be without this book. The authors assembled everything a person needs to know about hiking the state. I was dumbfounded by the volume of information provided including: nearby lodgings for those nights before (or after) a trek, trail maps, things to watch for and things to avoid. Novice and experienced hikers will get value from this book.Most suprisingly, I found it a really funny read! ("Just because we're IN the woods, doesn't mean we have to like we're FROM the woods.") The authors have a great sense of humor and the anecdotes they share will tickle you. I found myself wanting to hike some of the trails they cover just to see where some of these events took place!Overall, a great book - they obviously love hiking and their enthusiasm for it rubs off. Fortunately, they couple it with sage guidance.

Dr. Eisenbach has been my dentist for over 30 years, and I am saddened that he has just retired at the age of 92. This man is as sharp as a tack, and to read about his history is just amazing. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in history, especially the internment camps the jews were subjected to in WWII. His story is amazing and an inspiration to everyone that you can survive and succeed.

This was one of the most inspirational books I have read in many years. I was going through a difficult time when I read it, and his positive outlook on life and his tips at the end of the book were so helpful to me. What an amazing man---wish I could meet him in person. He deserves all of the happiness that he has had throughout his life. As for the book, it is a heart-wrenching story yet it demonstrates how hope, love and God can overcome even the most evil of circumstances. I highly recommend this book!

Dr. Eisenbach was my dentist for approximately 35 years. Even at age 85, he did great work. I still have all the crowns he did for me, and some of them are 40 years old. I knew from his staff that he had been in a concentration camp, but he never talked about it. I am glad that he finally told his story to the author. The book is very interesting and it is a good read. I highly recommend this book!

Jack, Jacob, Kuba, dr. Eisenbach is my uncle. My father, Leib Eisenbach, also from Łódź, Poland, loved him very much. Dad sent me to stay with Jack when I was a little girl and he embraced me as his own ( and of course, I had full x-rays and a splendid cleaning)! When my father died over 20 years ago, Jack and his youngest son David flew from California to New York to pay respects. They took a 10 hour round-trip flight and stayed just for the day. I never forgot this kindness and selflessness. Every year, I send a photo of my family to Jack and every year he send me a hand written note. He is never too busy. He is a hero and an inspiration. The resilience he demonstrated in the worst of times, he carries forward with him with every day. My father referred to Yacov as a “mensch” - A man of honor - and this he truly is!

The book reveals how this young man dealt with all his heartache and losses. He was extraordinary in how he cared for his brothers, father, family and friends.At times the book is overwhelmingly filled with heartbreak and loss, but he is strong and he gets through it all. I believe where Hitler was full of hate this young man was filled with love. You won't be sorry for taking the time to read his story.

I heard the author speak about his book in person. His story is fascinating and heartbreaking. One can easily see how their peaceful complacency enabled this tragedy to happen before they knew what was going on. The author explains what he saw happen with his family members and how he managed to survive the nightmare.

I learned a lot I didn't know. More people should read this book about a very bad time in the history of Germany that many have read about, but have forgotten. We must not forget this time in history. With this true well written account I hope I never forget. How could any one be so cruel to another person. May this never be allowed to happen again.

A great memoir of man who survived one heartbreaking event after another. He was so strong and was able to confront each terrible time and come through it all with a great attitude and not let it ruin his life. Any complaints I have are nothing compared to what Dr.Eisenbach endured.

I read an article that said you cannot call yourself a science fiction fan if you haven't read Neuromancer. At thirty years old, i considered myself a connoisseur of sci-fi books, movies, and television, but had never read Neuromancer. Having read it now, I'm not so sure i agree with the article I read, but i can unequivocally say that if you consider yourself a sci-fi fan, you will thoroughly enjoy reading this book - it is now probably in my top ten. Particularly if you enjoy noir-ish, gritty sci-fi like Neal Stephenson, Philip K. Dick, Richard K. Morgan, you need to read this. The story and writing are fantastic - i think the biggest reason i hadn't already read the book was because it can often be painful to read future-based computer/tech-heavy sci-fi that was written three decades or more ago. The story devices can seem (as one would imagine) dated to the extent that our own technological evolution does not gel with the predictions made by the writers. This book is a notable exception. For a book that deals heavily with tech, computer programs, AI, and "cyberspace," it is insane to think this was written in 1984. You will not be disappointed - i would expect that this will become one your favorite sci-fi books, and if not, will least enjoyable serve as another feather in your cap towards readings the genre's so-called "classics."

I’m fairly well read, love sci-fi, and picked up Neuromancer because I was told it’s a pretty landmark piece of work for the sci-fi and cyberpunk genres.I am so relieved it’s finally over.One of the most painfully boring and confusing books I’ve ever read. The author offers virtually no world building or explanation; rather he throws all these foreign and made up terms at you without defining them and just expects you to catch on. Same with characters. I didn’t care about a single one of them, and honestly I only kept up with the plot by periodically referencing Wikipedia. Even having understood the plot from Wikipedia, it’s really not that intriguing.I have no idea what fans see in this, and I’d recommend something like Snow Crash instead.

I didn't quite "get" this book the first time through, but upon rereading it, I've come to love it. Really, the biggest barrier when it comes to enjoying this book is the fact that Gibson throws the reader into the world of Neuromancer without explaining much immediately. I think that during my first reading I was confused, but my second time through, I already had something of an understanding of the book, allowing me to enjoy it more fully without being baffled. This book is brilliant. The strongest thing about it is probably the atmosphere. It is consistent throughout and just feels unique. The computer focused future of the Neuromancer feels fleshed out and alive. One thing I really loved about this was its connection between artificial intelligence and demons. It really makes you think about how what would once be considered magic is now commonplace. The protagonists are very well developed while the other characters don't get a ton of screen time. I thought this was a bad move on Gibson's part at first, but I see this move as being great for keeping the focus on computers and tech, rather than humans. While I'm not sure how I feel about having to read a book twice to enjoy it, I have to admit that I loved this book the second time through.

Today, NEUROMANCER may seem dated, as some note, but this single book, like Kubrick's "2001, A Space Odyssey " changed the look and tone of science-fiction forever. Many of the words Gibson created changed our lexicon and he helped create a way to speak and consider the rapidly evolving digital, internet world then that we can't live without today. You may not like the characters, I didn't, but he helped me grasp, as no one else, the world to come.

Neuromancer is quite simply the greatest, most prescient near-future sci-fi novel ever written. Although Gibson's world is dark and gritty and, in many ways, rather dystopian, I want to live there, or at least visit often. The world-building in Neuromancer is seamlessly organic. There isn't any long-winded exposition regarding how things in the author's world are and how they got that way. They just are, there on the page, and it feels real. The futuristic setting is woven into the plot so tightly that it's hard to separate the two. Gibson is not just a good storyteller, he is a wordsmith. He writes almost lyrically, his turns of phrase both tight and fluid at the same time. I wish I had his chops.I first read Neuromancer in 1998, and it felt prophetic then. That hasn't changed. Even as real-world technology and society evolves, Neuromancer manages to keep pace. It's 2014 and Neuromancer is just as relevant and thought-provoking today as it was when it was first published way back in 1984. Aside from the conspicuous absence of cellular devices, the setting so brilliantly wrought in the novel still seems like it's just a couple of miles down the road, in our future. My not-yet-teenage kids could someday visit Chiba City and bump into Case or Molly Millions- Gibson makes it so easy to imagine. Neuromancer is a masterpiece of science fiction and, I would argue, English language literature in general. It is just as satisfying and immersive today, after many reads, as it was the first time I read it.If you end up reading Neuromancer and enjoy it, I highly recommend the other books in Gibson's Sprawl Trilogy, Count Zero, Mona Lisa Overdrive, and the three of the short stories in the collection Burning Chrome. Gibson's next three novels, known collectively as the Bridge Trilogy are good, but pale in comparison. That said, Gibson's "good" is most other contemporary and current authors' best.

It is one of the most boring books on this subject. The treatment of the material is very bad. Terminology used is not standard and very difficult to follow.

I bought this book by mistake. (Sorry Adam.) I thought Bill Bryson was the author. Then I started reading it and quickly realized my favorite author did not write the book but was only recommending it. However, with each unfolding paragraph, I found a laugh-out-loud, but highly insightful and informative book, with insight not only into the facts and absurdities of the places described, but insights into the author’s self-deprecating self. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and immediately began sharing what I was learning with friends. I will buy a copy for my son, who has long aspired to be Adam, not knowing someone like Adam exists in reality. I will read the other books written by Adam, and look forward to his future works as well.

Don’t Go There by Adam Fletcher is described as “From Chernobyl to North Korea-- One Man’s Quest to Lose Himself and Find Everyone Else in the World’s Strangest Places.” The subtitle probably suffers from a politically correct faux pas; in chapter one Adam is losing himself in Turkey but companion Annett is with him. It is not “one man’s” quest until Adam manages to piss Annett off. However, it is a travel novel and for the constant traveler such as myself, this book is automatically interesting. Reading this will introduce potential travelers to practices that might be a culture shock to the unprepared. For instance, in Chapter One Annett and Adam are in Turkey where during anti-government demonstrations they observe much of the population protesting in the streets by banging on kitchen pots and pans. Fletcher describes this as a time-honored tradition going back to 1923 during the time of Kemal Atatürk.The pair has an adventure on a bus in China that takes place over more than forty hours. That is forty hours on a bus that is not moving. Drivers are waiting for authorities to lift a barricade. There are lessons for the reader. When traveling in the lesser developed world (the countryside of China) take plenty of food and water. This was a familiar situation to me, one which I nearly copied a few years ago in Cambodia.Similar cautions apply when traveling in Africa. Adam and Annett traveled to Ghana. They toured schools run by a volunteer agency and discovered an interesting phenomenon. Locals assumed that the two could be the source of donations for further education. When they tried to explain they were in Ghana as tourists on a vacation, the answer was “You came to Ghana for vacation?” The questioners adopted a tone of amazement when asking this question.The excursion to Israel glosses over an important point. Travelers who previously visited several Muslim countries are going to have problems getting through immigration checks and procuring a visa. Adam and Annett even crossed from Jerusalem into Palestine controlled areas. This section is heavier on philosophy than humor but is still worth reading.The dialogue between Adam and Annett is hilarious. She is the sensible one, the one who believes in making plans and thinking before starting out. She is not shy about blaming Adam when things go wrong, in other words frequently. Her criticisms mostly contain a lot of wry humor. Adam is a guy who thinks about something, launches, and then reacts to the flow of things. Adam is also remarkably averse to work. He has found a way to make money as a nomad with a computer. Annett has a job which requires her physical presence; this also serves as an anchor for Adam so that he is not perpetually traveling. The pair has a residence hub in Berlin where they can recover from developing world realities between trips.This is a hilarious travel book. I don’t see any danger of revealing spoilers. I want to comment on some of the conditions they meet and how they deal with problems, but they are only samples. The book is full of practical issues and occasionally some philosophizing on the nature of war, income inequality, and what should be international human rights. Even the philosophizing is hilarious as it provokes serious thought.A part of any traveler’s journey, desired or not, is the wonderful interactions with other travelers and expatriates. I am being sarcastic; I avoid prolonged social engagements with other travelers. Adam and Annett have the benefit of supporting each other. This is also good advice, companions at least act in a predictable way. Again, there is a lot of humor as Adam and Annett meet some complete whackos.The Hare Krishna Ashram in Argentina experience broke up the Adam-Annett team as far as further travel outside Germany. Annett was tired of not having creature comforts available. Adam went on to visit Chernobyl, a couple of micro-nations, and Romania. There is an interesting section on his return to his hometown in England. There are very good observations on travel in general, the idea that you may be able to go home again, and the very decent idea that adventures are everywhere. It is just a point of view.If anything in the book is a spoiler, it is the details of a trip to North Korea. I won’t comment on it. It is worth reading for humor, philosophy, and information not generally known. I gave this four Amazon stars because the first part of the book was hilarious up until the time Annett went back to Germany. Adam traveling alone is not as interesting. But he does get his groove back so the novel ends on a high note (with humor) also.

A must read! This book is a true eye opener. Mr. Fletcher and his girlfriend travel to places that are not recommended for tourism to find out why. And they do find out why. All are told with a lot of humor but are also well grounded in truth. Told in a way that makes you feel you are there with them. Mr. Fletcher paints a very vivid picture. I finished reading this book a couple days ago and I am still feeling the shock of their trip to North Korea and the description of what they saw there. There is nothing funny about life in North Korea. How in todays world can a place like North Korea exist? Very sobering.

I really enjoyed traveling with Adam to places no sane person would visit throughout the world, from Chernobyl to North Korea. It was truly fascinating, with his romance with Anet a delightful sub-plot. The reader will see how Adam grows and evolves from an adventuresome guy to settling down to adulthood and responsibility, after his grand adventures. A truly good, highly recommended book for anyone who enjoys true non-fiction off the beaten path. I actually sat up all night to finish it.

This book is underpriced.I have recently read some overly serious and pretentious travel books. This is not one of them. This author has a lot of humility and ability to laugh at himself. And he has very good reason to be laughed at, frankly. He and his descriptions make this book so funny. I have laughed pretty hard reading it.Sometimes a book or movie will be good for further laughs a week, or a year later. I think this is definitely one of those books.I also identified with the unexpected events that happen while traveling. If you can laugh, it changes everything.

With humor, pathos, and insight, Adam takes readers on trips to exotic and sometimes absurd locales they’d probably never choose to visit themselves. He is a delightful travel companion with a fresh, self-deprecating voice and a clever way of acquainting us with the little-known corners of the world. I especially appreciated his kind, forgiving views about the “different” experiences he had. I feel like I’ve been on a slow bus through China, North Korea, Russia and a few spots I had never even heard of before. I loved this quick, fun, humorous read and want to read MORE by this wonderful writer!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book! Adam, whilst in pursuit of meaningfulness in his life, ventures to God-forsaken destinations to experience the local lore and encounters interesting characters and situations. The narrative is great and brings to mind travel logs many of us keep during our own travels, except Adam's are more entertaining! I found at the end of each chapter (location) I'd wish he'd stayed a bit longer and shared a bit more. His return to his hometown was insightful and probably my favorite chapter. Except maybe North Korea. Well done, Adam.
