As with so many civilizations, ancient and modern, the history of the Assyrian civilization is written in blood. The book describes the start, rise and fall of their civilization which started around 2660 BCE. There is not much evidence about the earliest period, though.One of the techniques they used in conquered territories was to displace people to other locations which helped break up the cohesion of those areas and lessen the chance they would revolt. The Assyrian empire went through periods of growth and collapse. They could also, at times, be extremely violent especially in what they did to kings who opposed them (kill the king, flay his skin and then put the remains on display.)The book discusses the Assyrian government, military, daily life, the various classes of citizens, their art, math, science and religion. There is also a bibliography.It's a well-done about about a civilization that lived and died by the sword, literally.
Amazing book covering a great ancient civilization & empire! I was familiar with with the Assyrians from the Bible. One of the best military forces in ancient world . Very ruthless in battles except for the time a certain angel took care of 185,000 soldiers . Their customs & all phases of life is covered in this book. Just super book on all that took place in Mesopotamia.Wonderful book in the Captivating History Series!
So far I am part of the way through the book and I love history and I'm learning a lot that I haven't known about this era and our history. Some parts read lucky history book like from school but again I love history and it's very informative and I can't wait to finish the book and go on to reading other books from captivating history. I would recommend this to anyone who loves history or who just wants to learn new things about our past.
Imagine a horrible book report by a sixth grader who did not read the book, vague generalizations without any substantive history or narrative. Just beyond horrid and a complete waste of time. The only redeeming thing about it it that it is short so if you ignore my advice and finish it, you won’t have wasted too much time.
I like this one,before I read this book pretty much all I knew about the Assyrians was what I read in the Bible. Now thanks to this book I know much more about them. This book goes into detail about them, they were an aggressive nation, as the book states they needed to expand to survive.
When I read Palestine I got turned off. There was not such a place in Assyrian times until the Roman onslaught about 1200 years later. Otherwise, the book style feels like an intro into Ancient History for the 7th grader. Which might be a targeted audience. So 3 stars
I loved the very detailed way the topic was covered! I usually get lost within dates and facts. Although that Information was given, I was able to use the maps and anecdotes provided to gain a real picture of the scale and orientation of the empire's growth and decline.
