"As a teacher Sydell Rosenberg was attuned to the spirit of children, and her sophisticated and fun haiku are particularly accessible for young readers. Touching on a wide range of subjects, Rosenberg invites kids to look and look again. Her keen observations and lilting imagery will inspire them to do just that.Sawsan Chalabi’s charmingly quirky illustrations and stylized lettering present each poem with dash and personality that will enchant kids. Her delicately lined drawings are infused with vibrancy from a gorgeous color palette. Just like Rosenberg’s haiku, Chalabi’s pages are animated with a love for life that will resonate with kids―and adults.H is for Haiku would make a terrific gift for poetry lovers and a wonderful addition to home, school, and public library collections."―Celebrate Picture Books"...a delightful exploration of the alphabet through Haiku. "H" is also for. . .(but this is not about me; it's about an amazing book featuring one of poetry's often misunderstood and under-celebrated forms, haiku)."The split second one starts to touch a flower--real or plastic? That's haiku. Before the hoof comes down--that's haiku." Sydell RosenbergH IS FOR HAIKU is a collection of haiku form with a tender back story. In interactions and conversations with Amy Losak, who writes the introduction to the book, at Facebook, it was the dream of her late mother, Sydell Rosenberg to publish a collection of haiku. An active member and leader within the Haiku Society of America, Rosenberg was a contributor to such projects as Haiku on 42nd Street, an urban art project that saw poetry adorning shut-down, shuttered movie theater windows and marquees.Rosenberg's verse invites us to talk about form. Haiku often gets the "easy poem" treatment for a number of reasons, I suppose. But the true nature of haiku? Not so simple as it asks us to look a little closer. To capture that moment. To bring that moment back in a tiny, three-sided frame: 5-7-5. Interacting with Losak, I learn that American haiku rarely follows the traditional form we have been taught in the classroom during poetry units. For this alone, I am grateful for this book and for Losak's expertise and appreciation of this short form.Sawsan Chalabi brings all the verse to life in illustrations that invite personification and anthropomorphism throughout. Nothing is lost in the form for Chalabi's presentation of the text which now mirrors a sort of "concrete" approach as books become skyscrapers and word-swelled raindrops fall from the top of the page. Chalabi's illustrations actually serve not only as a visual but as a sort of maker for the structure and the shape of the form featured. As my friends find this collection, they'll no doubt find their favorite page (as I have found mine). We collect ABC books in Room 407, and H IS FOR HAIKU's verse is presented in this order that takes the reader about the city to observe moments in nature and moments in humanity. From the cat to the boy to the car to the card, the text becomes a model for how the form could be used to cover the course of a day or a subject with the young reader and writer using the book as a model for how to arrange the pieces created.Bring authors and artists together around a roll of butcher paper to draft and to draw what haiku might look like if we were writing about our school, our community, our state. H IS FOR HAIKU is the perfect model text for collaborative writing and creating around a form.During National Poetry Month, we have an opportunity to celebrate poetry and poems. Students across the country will learn about the poets and about the forms. When Amy Losak made a connection with Penny Candy Books, the poetry and the teaching community were able to find and keep a little bit of treasure in a tiny book. One moment. Three lines. Seventeen syllables. And we see this form every single day; we simply don't take the time to write them down in words.

This beautiful treasury of haiku poems takes readers on a journey from A-Z, encouraging them to notice the smallest moments. Topics including a bike ride, squirrels, and the rain delight and engage. Vibrant illustrations add to the beauty of the book. And a note by the author's daughter provides information about the author and about haiku. A lovely addition to any children's book collection.

Sydell Rosenberg's Haikus have captured the essence of life. Beautifully written and beautifully illustrated. Love each and every one of the very special small moments (that speak loudly) found in this lovely book.

a wonderful collection of haiku that a daughter had published in honor of her deceased mother.

I loved this read! What a wonderful way to introduce the alphabet and Haiku all at once! I highly recommend this book.

This book is literally a work of heart. Amy Losak made it her mission to help her late mother; Sydell Rosenburg’s words take flight into the world. What is haiku? Amy says it best, “Haiku poems make small moments big.”Rosenberg’s A-Z Haiku take everyday scenes that nature paints and adds the color and the rhythm that make them dance upon our memory in a special way. They linger there and beg for the attention they rightfully deserve. So get comfortable, and share these small nuggets of nature’s beauty with the children in your life.Favorite Line- “HOLDING UMBRELLAS CHILDREN, LIKE ROWS OF MUSHROOMS, GLISTEN IN THE RAIN”Chalabi’s illustrations are eye-catching, detailed and active. I love the way the Haiku intertwines throughout the art and becomes incorporated with it. Chalabi also uses color, size and thickness in the font to put the focus on just the right words.

Amy Losak is the daughter of Sydell Rosenberg, a charter member of the Haiku Society of America in New York City in 1968. Losak has spent the last several years on a personal mission to organize and assemble her mother's work into a picture book for children—something her mother always dreamed of doing. Those efforts to revive and preserve her mother's literary legacy have finally been realized in H IS FOR HAIKU: A TREASURY OF HAIKU FROM A TO Z, published by Penny Candy Books. A collection of everyday moments, many inspired by an urban setting, Rosenberg's fresh perspective is paired with amusing and lively illustrations by Sawsan Chalabi.

"H Is for Haiku" is absolutely delightful. A picture book containing 26 haiku by Sydell Rosenberg, it is organized as an alphabet book, but doesn’t feel preachy or instructive like so many of them do. If anything, the reader forgets it’s an alphabet book long before reaching “z.”The poems capture brief, precise snapshots of life that are instantly recognizable to most kids, especially to those who live in the city. For instance, Rosenberg brings us “sweat-sprinkled” office workers lining up for ice cream on a hot day, and umbrella-holding children, who appear like mushrooms glistening in the rain. Perhaps the urban setting of many of the poems explains why there’s a visual grittiness to many of the pages (the illustrator is the gifted Sawsan Chalabi). Now deceased, Rosenberg was a charter member of the Haiku Society of America in 1968 who at times believed that easing the 5-7-5 syllable count better fits the English language. (Many if not most poets writing English-language haiku today no longer adhere to the strict 5-7-5 syllable pattern practiced in Japan.)"H is for Haiku" was championed by Rosenberg’s daughter, Amy Losak, who says it was her mother’s “dream” to publish a book of haiku for children. With its striking images of everyday life, "H is for Haiku" promises to be a great tool for helping children (and their associated adults) to see and hear the poetry in their own lives.

Review

Named a Top 10 Spring 2017 Book in Memoirs/Biographies by Publishers Weekly“Your Art History 101 syllabus just got a lot more fun.” —O, the Oprah MagazineNamed one of the 23 best art history books of all time by Book Authority“A terrific essay collection with quick and pithy profiles of famous and not-famous women artists—Alice Neel, Louise Bourgeois, Lee Krasner, Kara Walker, etc. Spunky, attitudinal, SMART writing, excellent color reproductions.” —Susan Stamberg, NPR“Inspiring, charming, and eye-opening.” —The Millions“In her entertaining and accessible debut, Quinn mixes biography, art history, and women’s studies to shed light on 15 women artists.… The color reproductions add to this book’s appeal, giving readers a chance to appreciate the artists’ work as well as Quinn’s upbeat writing.” —Publishers Weekly“Can you name five women artists? That question, which launched a recent social media campaign, receives a beautiful answer in art historian Quinn and illustrator/writer Congdon’s accessible and intimate tour of 15 female artists from the 17th century to the present.” —Library Journal“As its title suggests, Broad Strokes isn’t stuffy. There’s plenty of scholarship here about women artists over the centuries, but Quinn combines her research with a lively, breezy tone that turns her subjects into more than feminist symbols. They’re masters in their own right, bold and brilliant despite the limits they faced.” —Christian Science Monitor

As an art historian I am delighted to see these extraordinary women artists presented and Quinn does add new insight into the lives and works of several of the artists. However, I think Quinn ruins her approach by trying to be "too cool" and by using the f-word and other base observations not appropriate for serious research. She has paired well done writing with lowering herself to use expletives. Is this what we have to do today to appeal to readers ? I think it is a disservice to those women being presented. I also think the book centers too much on her and is often plain silly as to how she relates herself to studying these women.

Five stars means I love it - but not unconditionally! Quinn's initial quest for information on Lee Krasner led her to Janson's History of Art and then Artemisia Gentileschi. "By the time I hit the back cover, I had a list of sixteen women, one of them Lee Krasner. In more than 800 pages, this was all "official" art history could offer." Slowly, Quinn moved on and discovered other female artists like "Rosa Bonheur, a swaggering animal painter from the nineteenth century..." or "Edmonia Lewis, who was part Chippewa, part African American" In another class Quinn made use of her French language skills and studied Adelaide Labille-Guiard. I admit, I had never heard of either Lewis or Labille-Guiard before - Quinn's breezy tone made it easy to continue."You may well be asking: What the hell?" and off she goes describing the Gentileschi painting. Yes, the one were Judith assisted by her maid severs the head of Holofernes. "They could be Julia Child and Alice Waters deboning a turkey." It is so funny, so cutting, and so disturbing because we/I have never read anything translating this gruesome scene to something very contemporary, performed by modern women. Beyond describing the artists' most well-known works, Quinn tells of their life - what made them painters/sculptures, why were they successful or not, how did they live? Throughout the book Quinn offers stories from contemporary movies or novels that make for very easy reading and understanding of the heroine's (artist's) predicaments - compare Judith Leyster to Frans Hals via the Da Vinci Code. Then there are paintings who were first attributed to male masters, in fact being star attractions and then quietly put into storage and rediscovered, Quinn loves those. Throughout the book she seems to chuckle every time there is something along the lines of the Rosa Bonheur quote "the fact is, in the way of males, I only like the bulls I paint." Sometimes it is just too much levity and I could have done without it. The chapters on Edmonia Lewis, Vanessa Bell, Alice Need, Ruth Asawa and Ana Mendieta introduce these barely acknowledged artists - I am grateful to Quinn for introducing them to me.

I bought this book as a gift for an older woman who is an accomplished artist and a good friend. The primary subjects she portrays are women (usually in woodcut prints), so I thought this book would interest her. This may be the only book I've ever returned for reasons other than shipping damage. There are three basic things I don't like about this book: 1) The overall writing style is appallingly slangy, sloppy, and otherwise, undisciplined [believe me, I'm no prude, but on page 52, for example, in the space of about six sentences, the author uses major obscenities three times (Amazon rejected this review the first time because I quoted from the book), so be careful about who you give this to!], 2) The watercolor illustrations (these are the author's portraits of the artists she writes about] are overly sentimentalized, not particularly well done, and really detract from the impact of the book, especially given the high quality of the artists inside; and 3) The text font is uncomfortably small. This book might be appropriate for someone who has zero knowledge about art or the equivalent of a high school education, though I wouldn't give it to a youngster because of the vulgar language. Most of the artists in this book (Alice Neel, Ruth Asawa, etc.) are very well-known in the art world, so there weren't too many surprises for me. The only positive things I can say about this book are that women artists need greater recognition for their role in art history, so this book may be one tiny step forward in raising awareness about them; the technical quality of color reproductions is good; and the layout is nicely done, with the exception of the type, which, as I mentioned above, is very small. Now, getting really picky, I hated the choice in paper for the cover, kind of a fake-looking, cloth textured paper that looked rather tacky. There are many other better written and more comprehensive books on the same subject out there.

A lively, richly detailed introduction to fifteen fine artists who have been needing more ink for a long time. Bridget Quinn could have written yet another collection of biographies of the usual suspects -- Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Georgia O'Keefe, Frida Kahlo -- but instead she introduces us to some lesser known names. Written in a chatty style laced with a lot of autobiography, "Broad Strokes" is aimed more at the general public than art historians. She clearly loves great art, and she makes that love contagious. "Broad Strokes" makes you want to high-tail it to the nearest art museum.

As my daughter, a toddler, begins to experiment with art, I wonder: what female artists can inspire her? Enter Broad Strokes, a delightfully personal and intimate view into the lives and work of some of the world's most influential female artists. This book is monumental and so needed in a world where women's art and creative work is repeatedly marginalized. I cannot wait to read it to my daughter, for her to engage with such critical discourse and images of art that will surely provide her with the needed space and support to continue to explore creativity and feminism.

Review

“Reiter’s superb narrative of how the team got there provides powerful insights into how organizations—not just baseball clubs—work best.”—WALL STREET JOURNAL"Colorful... Astroball plays like a giant crossword puzzle as pieces of the team are slotted in leading up to the franchise's historic moment."—USA TODAY"Vivid... Reiter delivers the goods."—BLOOMBERG BUSINESSWEEK"Astroball is the baseball book of the year, essential for baseball executives at every level, accessible and fun for fans."—STAR TRIBUNE“[Astroball] will of course be of interest to sports fans and Houstonians, but the message (man + machine = success) should also resonate in business settings and the fields of medicine and education… The story isn’t just that the Astros won the World Series, it’s [that] the road they took getting there has value.”—HOUSTON PRESS “What happens when Big Data analytics proves an insufficient foundation for success in business? How can the so-called ‘human factor’ be integrated into a framework that enhances a statistical approach? These are the questions Ben Reiter grapples with in Astroball, a persuasive study of the making and rise of the Houston Astros… Few scribes today can match Michael Lewis’s ability to just plain write, whether about sports, politics, or economics. But Reiter’s engaging account adeptly blends a journalist’s nose for a good story, a writer’s nuanced sympathy for his characters, and an industry trend-spotter’s analysis of important new developments. A worthy update of Moneyball indeed.”—CLAREMONT REVIEW OF BOOKS“Ben Reiter has written the definitive, untold story of the biggest turnaround in recent baseball history. This riveting behind-the-scenes account offers fresh insight into the executives who built the 2017 World Series champions—and the players who delivered. Astroball is Moneyball for the next generation, not just the baseball book of the year, but the business and ideas book of the year as well.” —KEN ROSENTHAL, two-time Sports Emmy winner for Outstanding Sports Reporter    “Ben Reiter’s incredible access to the World Series champions makes for narrative as riveting as a Game 7. But Astroball is so much more. It is a look at the future, and not just of baseball. For all the talk of computers replacing human judgment, the most complex problems are often best addressed when computers supplement human judgment, rather than supplant it. The Astros’ human/algorithm partnership turned a historically bad team into a champion in six years. Other industries, take note.” —DAVID EPSTEIN, bestselling author of The Sports Gene    “Reading Astroball is like being part of the Astros' Decision Sciences team or having a seat and a laptop in their Nerd Cave. Ben Reiter gives us an inside look at the state of the art of winning baseball: packed with cutting-edge technology, psychology and analytics, but allowing for the human element.” —TOM VERDUCCI, bestselling author of The Yankee Years (with Joe Torre) and The Cubs Way    “This book is the definitive look at the recent history of the Houston Astros and how they became the model franchise for the present and future of MLB. Ben takes you through the evolving blueprint that delivered both a championship in the fall of 2017 and a roster built to win for years to come. Reiter called it first, on the cover of SI in 2014. I wish he would pick my stocks.” —JOE BUCK, three-time National Sportscaster of the Year and bestselling author of Lucky Bastard   “Astroball is a superb and unfettered look at how a championship baseball team is constructed.  Analysis and algorithms might be the new baseball card numbers but Ben gets close enough to Jeff Luhnow and his staff to understand their incredible forward thinking when it comes to the human factor. This book is readable rocket science.” —RON DARLING, former New York Mets All-Star and bestselling author of Game 7, 1986“Astroball is Moneyball 2.0, a fascinating dissection of the processes by which the Houston Astros rose from perennial cellar dwellers to World Series champions. Ben Reiter systematically uncovers the crucial elements to success in baseball; as a fan of the game and as a major league pitcher, this book forced me to look at my sport through a wider lens. Detailing the ascension of the Astros while entertaining with colorful anecdotes, Astroball is a must-read for those looking to improve in any industry.” —CRAIG BRESLOW, twelve-year Major League pitcher

Astroball is a fantastic read. Reiter hooks the reader from the very first pages of this vibrant narrative, which weaves together compelling personal stories, fascinating characters, and just the right amount of inside baseball details. Whether you are a baseball fan or not, I'm confident you will love Astroball as much as I did.

What a fun read! I enjoy baseball as much as the next person, but I really love characters and problem-solving, which are the real heart of this book. And it's incredible that the author predicted the 2017 World Series years before! In the book, you get to know the guys behind the scenes at the Astros, and how they used their various smarts (like poker skills, ivy league education, etc) to build a better team than the statistics would predict. Really enjoyable for baseball fans, critical thinkers, and anyone who loves an underdog story.

I never should have read "Astroball." First off, sports, bleh. What a waste of time. Second, Ben Reiter is one of several Yalies named Ben with whom I’ve hungout over the years and not the one I hit it off with most. But I confused him with a closer acquaintance and requested an advance copy. By the time I noticed Reiter’s suave smirk on the rear dust jacket, I’d already finished the preface and the prologue (yes, it has both, and yes, you should read both), and I couldn’t have put the book down if I’d tried. That’s because "Astroball" is about baseball the way "Remember the Titans" is about football. Sure, Reiter explains how the Astros went from being the team with the worst track record and prospects in the league to winning the 2017 World Series. But the consummate storyteller uses his unusual level of access to both players and the Astros front office to interweave dramas with much more widespread appeal: How an industry undergoes a revolution. How a parent’s fidelity to their inner compass can transform the course of a child’s life. How peeling back the layers of a professional victory almost always reveals some combination of hustle, skill, and luck, but mostly hustle. How a liability in one context becomes an asset in another. How organizational change done right looks a lot like nation-building. How a supportive romantic partner behaves in a crisis. How human instinct, though repeatedly proven fallible, remains indispensable. In prose with just the right balance of sobriety and artistry (e.g., “If a pitcher’s arm was the most valuable and fragile asset in baseball, a pitcher’s psyche was second”) and transitions that hum, Reiter introduces his stories’ concepts and characters, sometimes dozens of pages in advance, so that even a reader who gives fewer than two shits about baseball knew Carlos Beltrán from Carlos Correa and locked herself in a bathroom to absorb the blow-by-blow of a playoff game in peace. A game I already knew the winner of. It’s seamless, really, Reiter’s melding of backstory with story to produce a narrative of a magic process that’s magical in its own right.Take, for example, the following two vignettes about America’s pastime that teach as much about psychology and systems science as sport:In the cage, Bonds showed Beltrán how he liked to set the pitching machine to top speed, more than 90 miles per hour, and then gradually move closer and closer to it, training himself to react to pitches that arrived quicker than any human could throw them from a mound. Even more useful, to Beltrán, was the way he described his mentality. “Sometimes you’re in an oh-for-ten slump, and you might start to doubt your ability,” Bonds said. “But you have to understand that every time you walk to the plate, the person who is in trouble isn’t you. It’s the pitcher.” A decade later, when Beltrán arrived for his first spring training with the Astros in February 2017, he knew that he appeared to his young teammates as Bonds once had to him. He was at least seven years older than almost all of them, earned 30 times more than some of them, and was by then a nine-time All-Star who had hit 421 home runs. During his first days with the Astros, he approached each one.***Sig Mejdal hated the World Series. He loved it, of course. It was the whole point, the simulated goal when he had spent his boyhood flicking the spinners of All-Star Baseball, the real one as he endlessly tweaked his models during all those late nights above his fraternity brother’s garage. Intellectually, though, he hated it. Baseball wasn’t a game like basketball, in which the best team—the Golden State Warriors, say—could reliably defeat almost any opponent at least 80 percent of the time. Baseball excellence could be judged only over the long term, and yet its annual champion, the club that history would remember, was decided after a series of no more than seven games. Any major league team could beat any opponent four times out of seven. “I wish it was a 162-game series, instead of seven,” Sig said. “But it’s seven. In every game, you have somewhere between a forty-two and fifty-eight percent chance of winning. Which is very close to a fifty percent chance. Which is a coin toss. The World Series is a coin toss competition.”If you like tight writing on fascinating topics, read "Astroball"—no interest in sports or analytics required. If you already read "Moneyball," trust me, read "Astroball" too. I’m betting if you do, I won’t be the only new member of Ben Reiter’s fan club.

As a long-time baseball fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Houston Astros I devoured Sports Illustrated’s Ben Reiter’s book “Astroball” - and loved it! I highly recommend it to any baseball fan regardless of your team loyalty. The book provides a fascinating account of the Astros’ amazing turnaround from the Sports Illustrated’s initially considered joke June 30, 2014 cover story predicting the Astros 2017 World Series win. Today, with the Astros considered a super team (with the Red Sox and Yankees) it is a bit difficult to remember how in 2014 the team had just concluded three years in a row at the BOTTOM of their division! Ben Reiter provides the fascinating backstory to the Astros’ owner, Jim Crane, and his selection as GM of Jeff Luhnow. Astroball well explains the data driven decision making approach, which, while the many successes are discussed at length, the stellar selection of Springer, Verlander and Bregman being discussed at great length, it also admits to the mega-mistake the Astros had made - the biggest being the release of J.D. Martinez - and what Luhnow had learned from it.Most interesting to me was the unbelievable two contributions to winning the World Series by an Astros player who had no at-bats during those seven games, Carlos Beltran.Bottom line, Astroball is an incredible story of modern day baseball. It clearly explains how data analytics synthesized with experience-based scouting have resulted in league beating baseball.

This is a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at so many and varied decision making processes. The author does a great job of following good and poor decisions, explaining the processes and the people. I love George Springer, Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman, but thought Carlos Correa was a little too polished (maybe calculating) in his demeanor. (To me, the wedding proposal took away from George and his series MVP performance.) There may be some truth to that, but it is because he has been planning this, in a mature, thoughtful manner, against great odds for a long time. More power to him! And I too wanted to understand Carlos Beltran's and Brian McCann's locker room contributions. I do wish there was more dugout and locker room conversations and exchanges - maybe that's for another book. "Astroball" still gets 5 stars from me!

I bought this because I am an Astros fan from Colt .45 day 1. I bought unseen and with some trepidation that it was going heavy into the mathmatical, statistical side, which is fine for folks with sharper minds than mine, but I am all about people. This book has all my favorite people!! It was a facinating account of the underbelly of winning Astros baseball that I would never of seen otherwise. I hope Jim Crane gave Ben Reiter a WS ring too!

Review

"A Finer Future brings hope by showing us a vision of a future with greater wellbeing, deep engagement with nature and each other, and the enormous economic benefit in transforming how we deliver energy, grow food, and finance industry. A manifesto for the future we must create." — Jennifer Holmgren, CEO, LanzaTech "A Finer Future is an important book for our times. The world is facing deep environmental and social challenges that threaten our collective well-being. These thought leaders provide the clearest explanation I've seen of how the world got to this point — the culprit is a fatally flawed story about what makes economies hum and people happy. This me-first philosophy now dominates the thinking in governments and businesses around the world, and it's dead wrong. But A Finer Future offers us some optimism, giving us a new and better story about how to build a thriving future. And like all good stories, this one is well-told — it feels a lot like sitting down with Hunter Lovins to talk about the future of humanity over a good drink." — Andrew Winston, author, The Big Pivot and Green to Gold "Join the movement for an economy driven by sustainable wellbeing rather than consumerism, profit and growth. This book is your introduction to a movement for sustainable wellbeing and a better world." — Kate E. Pickett, Professor of Epidemiology, and Deputy Director, Centre for Future Health, University of York " Amidst the wreckage of the industrial economy, a better, more humane, more just, and more durable economy is emerging. The obstacles and the economic alternatives and alternatives are laid out here by four of the most observant and prescient thinkers of our time. Indeed, there is a regenerative economy to be built and it will be the keystone of a finer future." — David W. Orr, Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics, Oberlin College, and author, Dangerous Years: Climate Change, the Long Emergency, and the Way Forward "A Finer Future provides a thought-provoking perspective and a call to action on the role of sustainability as a key factor in driving value. It challenges all of us to find strategies that truly align our economic, community, and environmental stakeholders." — Rob Katz, CEO, Vail Resorts, Inc."The end of the exploitive, and the rise of the regenerative: that's the clarion call in this must-read book. Our consumptive status quo is too costly for the economy and it's past-time we mainstream a new way. What we eat, wear, ride, fly, and build must be regenerative. How? This book shows the way. An authoritative nod towards a much-needed norm and narrative, this book is a masterful mix of the hard and soft sciences, putting solid numbers behind sound narratives. For anyone wanting to save people and the planet, this book is the path to pursue and the story to tell." — Nils Moe, Managing Director, Urban Sustainability Directors Network "Beautifully comprehensive and inspiring. What we need." — Dr Eban Goodstein, Director, Bard Center for Environmental Policy "Hunter Lovins is a pragmatic visionary, and the strategy she lays out in this book is the best chance we have to date of actualizing a regenerative future. One of the most luminary thought leaders of our time. Simply a must-read if you are interested in the future of the planet and your role in it!" — Brenna St. Onge, Executive Director, The Alliance Center "A Finer Future captures the reason we created our company. Hunter Lovins is a much needed elder telling a new story that can galvanize the largest "we" in human history. This book calls us to serve sanity, justice, and every living thing." — Donna Morton, CEO, Change Finance "Rarely has economics been so fun and exhilarating to read about. Four scholars at the forefront of the wellbeing economy agenda have crafted a pacy, captivating book. It blends vision with insightful analysis of why our world is in such a perilous state, with a good helping of tangible examples of the changes so vitally needed. Anyone reading it will soon find assurance that a finer, more functional and more fun future is entirely possible." — Dr Katherine Trebeck, Research Director, Wellbeing Economy Alliance "We spend too much time discussing problems without getting to solutions. This book provides the solutions needed to transform our economy into one that actually serves all of humanity, instead of only the rich. It's a must-read for anyone that cares about creating a better world not only for themselves but their children and grandchildren." — Ida Kubiszewski, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Crawford School of Public Policy, The Australian National University "A Finer Future is a work of refined synthesis and insightful visioning. Rooted in a stark analysis of current development trends its authors rapidly move beyond critique to developing an inspiring yet deeply practical narrative about transitioning to a regenerative economy. More than a guide or blueprint — it is an enlightened, pragmatic, and empowering roadmap through life as we know it, the choices we make, and the future we want." — Achim Steiner, Administrator, United Nations Development Programme "A Finer Future is a brilliant and well-researched book that guides readers to rethink what the future will look like once we shatter old narratives, paradigms, and models that no longer serve humanity and the planet. We are through with the waste and the inefficiencies and inequities that have been the unintended consequences of the last 100 years. This is a roadmap to a truly sustainable future." — Catherine Greener, VP Sustainability, Xanterra Travel Collection and Founder, Greener Solutions Inc "To build a better world, first we must imagine one. In this book, the authors do just that, laying out a vision for a better life and, crucially, a practical roadmap to get there. If you're disillusioned with today, this deeply researched book offers the path forward. I'll see you in our finer future. . ." — Freya Williams, CEO, Futerra North America "In this most compelling text Hunter Lovins delivers an engaging walk through what is possible for achieving — and excelling — in delivering products and services that are good for planet and people! It is a must-have for students and practitioners seeking to accelerate and amplify the transition to economies around the world where humanity and nature thrive." — Professor Cheryl Desha, Head of Civil Engineering (Nathan), Griffith University "This is the book we've been waiting for. With clarity and vision, Hunter and her co-authors give us the playbook for how we can craft the future in which we want to live. Buy it, read it, and live it." — John Steiner and Margo King, founders, Bridge Alliance. "A Finer Future is the best book out on how to reform capitalism in the direction of more fundamental changes and to buy muchneeded time. —Randy Hayes, Executive Director, Foundation Earth; and founder, Rainforest Action Network "A much-needed book with a call for constructive collaboration towards a finer future we all yearn for. We have all the technological solutions we need we just need to implement them. Lovins and colleagues show a path forward that allows all those of good will, some smarts, and stamina to get us out of the mess we are in towards an economy and society that works for 100% of humanity." — Dr Michael Pirson, Director, Center for Humanistic Management; Director, Master of Science in Management, Fordham University; and author, Humanistic Management: Protecting Dignity and Promoting Well Being "This book will make you smarter about creating real, lasting, generational value. If you know in your gut that we can prosper and restore our environment at the same time, but are told by politics you're wrong, then this book is for you." — Will Semmes, former Chief Deputy Director, California Department of General Services; and CEO, Bellwether Consultants "This book gives us the map, a voice, and the reassurance that we are on the right course. It has all come full circle; Natural Capitalism inspired us to start Waste Farmers, and Hunter's latest book provides the necessary roadmap for an economy that supports companies like ours and all of the stakeholders we serve." — John-Paul Maxfield, Founder & CEO, Waste Farmers "A Finer Future is perhaps the most important book of this century: the future of humanity may well rest on the achievement of the recommendations. If you care about the future of our species and our biosphere — really about the future of everything we hold dear — read this book, then roll up your sleeves and get to work." — Kim Coupounas, social entrepreneur and Director of B Lab, the certifying body behind B Corporations

Obviously, from the title one can see that it is a book of cause/effect and correct. I wouldn't expect to build a basic or beginner swing with it and one may still need instruction from a professional. My coach uses it and that is the primary reason I bought it. I suffered from self-diagnosing my swing and was incorrect more than half the time. It is overall a good book and used as a reference can correct flaws that inevitably creep into the golf swing especially when the flaw is correctly identified.

If you want to improve your swing, do yourself a big favor and go to a qualified instructor and get at least 6-12 lessons. I don't know any good golfer who hasn't had some formal private instruction. This book offers a good overview of some of the most common mistakes a golfer can make. I found it invaluable whenever my swing was little off.Although the illustration was good and better than most golf books you can buy, I still thought it could be better. Perhaps paying an artist to create many accurate drawings is expensive, but I think the book could have been immensely better if the publishers had.

I bought this at the recommendation of my PGA pro to go along with my golf lessons. The book is oriented into problems that occur in different phases of the golf swing or different parts of the golf game. A problem is described on the left page, with the solution and practice drills on the right page.It has been extremely helpful in reinforcing the corrections my pro is making in my swing. Since it's written in a topic/problem-oriented fasion, it's pretty easy to find the appropriate page and get right to the problem/solution. Since the sections are only two pages long, it's not a long drawn-out explanation, and makes for quick reading. Reading through the other sections that might not apply to me yet was also interesting. The main thing I wonder about is since I'm using it in conjunction with lessons, I know which faults to look up, and I get the feedback at my lessons. If I weren't taking lessons, I'm not sure I would be able to self-analyze my swing well enough to know which items to concentrate on. I suppose the same might be said about most books on golf, though.

Recommended to me by a pro as a good reference book. It's a great value. This book and Hogans fundamentals are timeless essentials to the golfer's library.

First of all I think the layout is brilliant. If I ever wrote a book I would copy it.I thought of giving 5 stars but I give it only 3 stars because it presents the golf swing in a disjointed piece by piece fashion. This could be described as "position teaching" in some ways. Or described as overly segmented. I have found that this approach leads to many years of frustration. I understand that it was written in the ancient days of 1993 and that times have changed since then. And that there are limitations to any books scope. I don't think the book is a complete package all by itself. But that is not a complaint about the book as a complaint about the intention of the book - to fix faults. To actually fix faults:a) I would suggest that this book must be accompanied by a video camera (beginner or advanced) and slow motion swing software (V1 home 2.0 free)b) beginners must learn to feel all the body parts during a swing to accurately identify a fault / fix (even advanced who still don't feel)c) Realize that all people are not the same and read this book along with Jim Hardy"s Plane Truth for Golfers and The Stack and Tilt Swing book. (both on Amazon) This is not a comment on any problems with Leadbetter's book as much as a new player needs to understand the variations of the swing in order to apply Leadbetter's faults and fixes. In summary I think Leadbetters book is really a good resource but not all by itself. (see a-c)

sill can't play golf

Very helpful!

Old book but still a great source to go to when you lost 'it' and need help, but you are too cheap to go to a professional. Chances are that if peruse this book long enough you will find the problem and a fix.
