David Lose is gifted in finding language that shares complex ideas in easy-to-understand ways. Making Sense of the Cross continues in this manner. He looks at the views of the cross from the gospel writer's perspectives and shows how context influenced each writer's content. He also traces historical views of the cross and helps the reader explore his or her own understanding. Well worth the read-- even better if you can read with friends and discuss.
It provides a concise and yet easy to understand dialog of the history of the three major thought arenas about the purpose of the crucifixion. Then it hits you with an analysis that seems to incorporate those thoughts and brings on a different understanding -- a leafs you to consider really experiencing the resurrection's gift.
This book is a great journey into the Theology of the Cross. I highly suggest anyone read this book who wants to venture into a deeper and more authentic faith. The Cross is where the Creator's grace comes full circle. What a wonderful theologian. Thanks Dave. Oh, and the writing makes the subject matter easily accessible for lay readers.
The progression of this study leads the reader through the uniqueness of each Gospel and the struggle experienced by the church through the ages. Rather that answer questions, Lose provides what is need for the reader to discover what sense he/she can make of the puzzle of the Cross. Highly recommended for those who are truly searching and open to being led through the Labyrinth of history and theology.
I used the book, the workbook and the DVD for a congregational Lenten study. The material is well organized and while it is easily understood the participants were challanged to expand their ideas about God and the work of the cross. I also appreciate that the material is written so that the it informs but does not "dumb down" for particpants, rather it respects their thought process and encourages conversation.
I participated in a bible study series using this book. I enjoyed the book for its easy to read and understand flow. But found reading a conversation between two people to be a bit distracting.
Unique presentation. What a great way to introduce Theology of the Cross. Will definitely read more of Dr Lose.
